The ' Joy of Cooking' is a great starter, because it teaches you 'how to' and 'why'. This makes you a more informed cook, which promotes your own creativity.

Get a copy of the Joy of Cooking, it's the best cook book out there. It's good for beginners and more accomplished cooks, so it will grow with you. I use mine at least once a week and I've been cooking for years. It has info on everything from a simple roast beef to a chateau briand. Also the food network's website is very helpful. They rate their recipes by how hard they are.

"Joy of Cooking" is great-lots of info and recipes of all skill levels. Also try Mark Bittman "How to Cook Everything"-it does have almost everything. These are the only cookbooks I use and I am a very good cook.

Go to Foodnetwork.com. They have a huge database of recipes to choose from. Plus, even recipe is rated according to its difficulty. And don't stress about it too much. All it takes to be a good cook is the ability to enjoy food.

Rachael Ray has some great books and they are pretty simple and fast.
By the way did you know that foodnetwork.com has cooking videos you can watch. Also marthastewartliving.com also has some that you can watch.
Makes it easy seeing someone else do it first.
