Supplementing the dilaudid with ibuprofen and tylenol won't hurt and since they all attack pain via different mechanisms, they may work synergistically to help lower the pain you are experiencing. You may ask your doctor for viscous lidocaine to put on topically, but I found that good ol' Noxzema in the blue tub works as well or better than the viscous lidocaine, and tends to stay on the outbreak spots better. And I sure hope that you are taking at least a gram of Valtrex orally every day. If not, your doctor needs to be reported to the licensing board.
And I second the previous suggestions of trying as best you can to get to a better place mentally, and lower the stress (difficult to do with the current situation), and take good supplemental vitamins. Get yourself as healthy as possible to help get over this more rapidly and prevent future outbreaks.
It *is* a heinous disease, isn't it?

I have had Shingles many times and know what you are feeling. Shingles are sores on the nerves usually under the breast. They can come in 2 forms, both of which I have had. One is the sores develop on the outside and can be seen and the other is the sores develop on the inside, which I have found more painful. The reason this is so painful is the sores develop on the nerves and many Doctors believe it is caused by stress. Other than what you are doing and taking the one thing you have to totally relieve yourself of is stress. Stress will cause the Shingles to last longer. This is your time and you are the one that needs the help, so tell everyone that wants something from you......NO! If the Dilaudid you are taking is 2mg you need to tell the Doctor that it is not helping and the dose can be increased, depending upon your Doctor. Dilaudid comes in 2mg, 4mg and 8mg doses. Usually if it is a persons first time taking a medication like this the Doctor will start a person on a low dose. Most Doctors will not even use this medication if the patient is not already on some other type of similar medication like Oxycodone. If you are on a low 2mg dose call your Doctor to see if he will increase the doseage or the amount you can take per day. I wish I could say there is a home remedy but there isn't, I did try a lot of things when I had Shingles including making a paste of baking soda and vaseline and applying it on a soft cloth and putting on the infected area. It didn't work. This is on of those things that the Cream and Pain Medicine the Doctor gave you are going to have to get you through this. But remember, no STRESS.

Such pain when you have shingles. The medication you are taking is very good. I had shingles fter my mother passed away. The doctor told me it was caused by the shock. I had it on the left side a bit above the waist. Your description is very accurate. It is a virus and it is contagious when the blisters are busting. I remember putting some pink lotion on it too but can't remember the name of it. I had to take a rest from work. I wish you a quick recovery because I know how painful it is. After many years, I still can feel pain when I'm overtired. And I still have the marks where the blisters were.
Take some time away from your busy life and relax in a different envirement if you can do it. You should recover quick enough.
Good luck.
