I've only ever been to Oahu, but this christmas we're going to Kaui. Staying in Poipu, right on the beach. Looking for recommendations on things to do... interesting in everything from great surf/snorkel beaches to dive spots, to pretty much anything else! Vegetarian eating tips particularly appreciated.

Any tips on cool off-the-beaten-track stuff appreciated!

We'll be there in January '07, can't wait! Kauai is the best island for hikes - definitely check out Waimea Canyon (Grand Canyon of the Pacific). I highly recommend a tour of the Napali coast; the 11 mile Kalalau trail is amazing but not for the timid. There's so much to do, but as others have said about Kauai, the best part is really doing nothing at all! Pick up a guide book (my favorite is the "Revealed" series, they're blue softbacks) and browse through and tag what interests you. Enjoy! Kauai is such a different experience from Oahu.

verify to snatch a (call of Island) THIS WEEK. Its a mag itemizing each little thing happening on that distinctive island. Oahu has a great sort of activities, whether it extremely is often over stepped forward subject parks. Honolulu is a extensive city, and you ought to lay the different way as much as get a tan. The Pipeline and sundown seashores are remarkable, yet too tough for babies. Pearl Harbor is extremely shifting. Maui is a extra comfortable trip placing. Quiet seashores and Lahina is a exciting city. The force to Hana is extremely long and pleasing, and the 7 swimming pools are wonderful. Haleakala volcano is outstanding at break of day. Take a boat trip to Molikini for large snorkle/scuba. Kauai is way less stepped forward, & extra comfortable.. Nepali coast you may snorkle in the grottos, and Waiamaya Canyon is incredible. i admire the super Island the suited (Hawaii) The energetic volcano, black sand seashores and pineapple plantations. whether it must be too rugged with a toddler and a grandma. i think of Maui is the suited island as a base with young ones. attempt to bypass to a minimum of two islands to get some variety. You cant see each little thing till you're there a minimum of a month.

We spent 5 days in Kauai, and had a great time. The highlight was a kayak/hike day up the Wailua river. We rented a 2-man kayak on our own and paddled up the river. The rental place gives you a map and you can 'choose your own adventure' so to speak. We put out on a little inlet, hiked thru the jungle to a gorgeous waterfall, and swam at its base. There was a big rainfall the night before, so the trail was very muddy...like up to your knees muddy. I wore my water shoes, which were actually really good for the mucky terrain. Have fun in Kauai...it is a beautiful place.

My best advice to you would be to look for some stores or shops along the way to where ever you are driving and stop to ask those that work there. Hanging out with the locals are good advice to but, being local myself I would warn you to be careful who you befriend. Not many still believe in the Aloha spirit like I still do.
Best to look for some older locals to talk too... they would be more trustworthy than the younger generation.

Have a good one

Get the book " A concise history of the Hawaiian Islands" by Dr. Phil Barnes. Read it. It's short and informative.

Please be respectful while you visit. Say "Aloha" (hello; love) often and if you can't remember to say "Mahalo" (mah-ha-low) do your best to thank any and all people for helping make your vacation beautiful.
