The problem you have with Digital as Apposed to Analogue 35mm is the Lens is Not detachable and the Whole camera is Battery Operated!
May be taking the batteries out and re-setting it from there might cure this-But Consult Your Canon Dealer (Or Retailer from where you Purchased it from!)

Yikes! I hope you get this in time. I don't know all the information to diagnose the problem but this is the worst to best case scenario:

It's flat out broken or defective: Buy a new one in the morning or exchange it where you purchased it.

Your return policy is expired from the store and the camera received some kind of little shock from a mild drop on the floor or static electricity: Warranty void from the drop, so buy a new one. slight shock of electricity, warranty should cover malfunction. However sending it back for service will take about a month..... Buy a new one.

It's broken and warranty is still valid: Buy a new one and send in the broken camera to the service department. By the time you get it back ( Christmas time ) give it to your sister for Christmas. And hint to her that this Christmas your in need for money ( the price of the new one ).

It's broken, money is tight: Buy a new one from a store that will accept full refund returns. ( this is a slap in the face to the sales person, but be honest and tell them how important your sisters presentation is to you. If they know ahead of time they just might sympathize with you and give you the display model; knowing that you will be a return customer with good re-pore)

: )

Hope this help, and hope your sisters presentation goes well.
