If you are sure about the persons experience & ability to do the work then go into that persons personal lifestyle. That way you will be able to judge what kind of person they are. Ask about their husband or wife or kids. Find out if they go to gym. Ask about their pets. I think if you ask about these thinks, they might also feel more relaxed to be open & honest with you. They might even be motivated to work better if you decide to hire them.

My favourite topic is travel - you can give a huge insight into yourself by discussing this topic, such as your cultural likes/dislikes, the size of your comfort zone, your independence. More than that your interviewer will always have some story too - like a camping trip with her family or a trip to england with the boys. You get them talking and you are a much better chance of getting that job!

I always start out with school, if they cant even finish high school then I dont want them! If they do have an education then you can open up to just about anything. Just a pet peeve but thats my opener.
