Communism, is bascially an advanced stage of socialism, and its is not necessary good or bad. But for Communism to be successful in giving its people a good life, everyone must subscribe to the system and embrace the belief that the system is good for them. In the utopia case, there wouldn't be any need for a government, only a facilitator and regulator is required. However, what we have seen in communist states is not quite what is idealized. Hence, a powerful leader such as Lenin and Kim Jong Il emerges and the priorities and directions of the state are commanded by this leader. This is undesirable because, remember that the system requires everyone to have the same thinking as the leader, leaving no room for individual beliefs. Recall China during the cultural revolution, everyone with some other alternate beliefs such as professors and teachers were persecuted by the Red army. Children were brainwashed to report any deeds by their parents which were not aligned to the Mao directives.
Logistically, the system is also not as efficient as the capitalist system. It prevents imports from other more efficient and cost-saving producers, and because external trade is minimal or zero, people do not get to enjoy goods not available in their state.
There are many more reason why practical communism is not desirable, but basically, they are at odds with the more efficient capitalist world, and limits the freedom of individual beliefs and practices. By the way, Cuba is not a very good example of communism, it is more of a semi pseudo-socialist state.
Just my 2 cents worth, I may be wrong.. =)

Aside from the murderous labor camps and ruthless dictators, communism is known to fail in this imperfect world, that is why people fear it. Let me explain:
Communism relies on something that will never happen. It relies on the idea that people will willingly distribute things evenly, especially the ones in power (dictators and such). Unfortunately, power is coupled with greed more often than not. That is why communism has failed every time, because humans are greedy. Even though communism exists in the People's Republic of China still, it isn't true communism anymore, in fact it's beginning to look more and more like good ol' western capitalism. As for Cuba, I don't know if you've seen how that nation is doing, but I think that when your people would rather risk drowning aboard a makeshift raft headed for the US than live in your country, it's a bad sign. Oh, and we all know the quality of life in those Indochina nations under communist rule. It's like Cuba, people want to leave but they can't.
Communism can only fail while humanity is imperfect.

This is a complex question. Some would argue that the fear of communism, the cold war, etc. was merely a straw hat to stir the emotions of the populations of both sides of the controversy. It must be noted, however, that socialism (the precursor to communism under Lenin), as implemented by Lenin and the later followers was an ideology that necessarily required conversion of others. That is to say, the socialists said we are "right" and you are wrong. Capitalism is also an ideology which requires other nations to follow along to be successful; thus the two are naturally in conflict with one another.
This is a 30 second answer to a question about which numerous books have been written.

I suggest you inform yourself a little bit in the history books. If you do that properly then you can come to own opinion.
Personally, I am not scared of communism, but it is not my "ideal", I like to have freedom to choose, and I like the competition in a free market and I do not like just being a number!
Just try to think where you would be today if you were born and brought up in a communist country. But one thing is sure, there is no perfect way or system to govern a country, it is like bringing up kids...hihi there is no perfect way there either!!!

Compare if you will the USA and Great Britain with Cuba, China, Viet Nam, and North Korea and ask yourself: which country you would rather live in; the democracies or the communist states?

I know I wouldn't want doctors to be earning the same as tailors. They worked hard for that education and a lot more is on the line than a screwed-up hem!

I'm not afraid. Bring them on!
But if you mean why don't we want it, it's because we understand that it doesn't work, and freedom, entrepreneurship and personal responsibility trump a dictator wearing a red star telling you what to do while trying to steal from you and making everyone equal under his tyranny.
