For example my wifes cat sits on her lap watching tv for hours, when my wife is annoyed by some event the cat is clearly annoyed also! When my wife is amused and laughs at some thing on the tv the cat takes this as a signal to bounce up and down like a pogo stick!!
It certainly cant be following the programme can it??
Is it just mentally deranged? or are other pets like this?

Our pets count on us for information on the world around them just like any social animal would in nature. I am guessing your wife's cat can tell when she is mad or happy and keys into her body language and tone of voice to make these "observations".
It is understandable that our pets learn to trust us and pay attention to us, even if they do not always do what we would want or get the specific meaning of our words. To verify this watch how they react to each other in terms of body language and tone. I think you will confirm they are very aware of each other, and would therefore also be aware of us.

Well actually I wonder the same thing...I got my dog when she was about 6 weeks old. I snore, she snores. I like to be well under the covers at night, she sleeps under the blanket by my legs. She knows how to eat from a fork and drink from a water bottle...she even sits at the table with my family when we eat. Its so weird yet cool how they have like little personalities of their own.

Pets do tend to draw energy from their owners. One of my cats gets her sporadic behavior from my husband. He cant stay still and neither can she!! While my second cat is more like me...quiet, and relaxed, but she knows what she wants!! Both cats are quite defiant...a trait they picked up from the both of us!!

Pets pick up moods of their owners very, very quick. They also pick up attitudes towards other people (especially trust / mistrust), and even some habits.

Annoyance does seem to be one of the easiest moods to pick up, though. I like the bouncing, though :))
