I worked nights for many years as a nurse. I read that people working night shift are much more likely to have a weight problem. It's certainly been a difficulty for me, and It seems to stem from having primarily opposite sleeping/waking hours from most of the rest of the world. Many people don't understand or respect the fact that night workers need peace and quiet during the day, in order to SLEEP. Also your melatonin level is thrown off if you don't sleep in the dark. Night owls have a tendency to eat at odd hours, too. So from my personal experience I certainly agree that sleep deprivation makes you gain weight.

It made me gain weight because I was always hungry and always eating. 3.00 a.m. is not a good time to be eating when I should be sleeping. Since I have somewhat gotten over my insomnia problem, I do not eat in the middle of the night because I am sleeping more and have lost weight.
