ok, no drugs. People are going to tell you to medicate, that's the wrong answer; those people medicate their 2-year old because they whine.
One: Bring something to occupy your time. If you read bring a book. If you don't read, well hell, now's the time to learn.
Two: Make a friend. Talk to your neighbor on the plane. They might not want to talk, but if you tell them you are afraid their humanity will kick in and they will share your pain with you.
Three: The take off and landing are the worst parts. Screw it. There's nothing you can do about that. I'm an avid flyer (I'm flying on thursday to Portland Oregon) and I still get the heebie-jeebies. You can't fix that part. Just do One and Two and you'll be fine.
Oh yeah, if you drink then have one on the plane. Hell, buy one for the friend you made on the plane while you read to each other!

I know this sounds crazy and I get all kinds of resistance from people when I suggest this to them, but the easiest way you can overcome your fear is to go to your nearest airport (ask for the FBO), seek a flight instructor, and go up and take an introductory flight lesson. Now, before you immediately dismiss this and say no, consider this, I am a former JSUPT instructor pilot and I have had several students that were afraid to fly. As soon as they started flying they very quickly overcame their fears.
People's fears of flying stems from the fact that they don't understand it, they don't understand the sounds that they hear, they don't understand the motions that they feel, etc. Another reason is that people frequently don't like to not be in control. The fact is, as a passenger, there is nothing that you can do about anything that is happening up in the cockpit. But at the same time, if you did have control over what's taking place in the cockpit, without being a pilot yourself, what would you do? Many people form all kinds of different theories about what is actually happening when they fly, the sounds they hear, the way pilots are able to do whatever it is that they are doing, what the pilots are thinking or talking about, etc. I am often amused about what I read in this forum because people form some pretty crazy theories. Furthermore, they believe their theories to be correct.
The only way to really understand all of this is to become a full-fledged pilot yourself, but this really isn't necessary. On the other hand, you will get a very basic understanding of flying, sounds that you hear, sensations that you feel, etc. if you go take a single, introductory flight lesson. Real knowledge, not just the crazy theories that people form, is the key to not being afraid to fly.

The best option is to take some flying lessons. of course.. that`s not possible in a week, so the best remainig option is to speak with a pilot and u will see that`s nothing to be afraid of.BTW: The flying has chaged a lot in the last 25 years. There`s really nothing to be afraid of. D

don't worry about it the TSA is doing a great job to make sure you are safe, make sure to check www.tsa.gov to see what you can and cant bring that will help alleviate some of the pressure because you will not have to be sent back to check stuff it will get you to your terminal quicker. take some sutafed about an hour before getting on the plain it will help you pop your ears. There really is nothing to worry about you should be just fine try to sleep you can ask your Dr for something to calm you down. bring stuff to do to keep you busy

Statiscally, flying is at least 21 times safer than driving in a car. So getting to the airport could get you killed more easily than flying! One in *two million* flights goes down on average. Relax..

Hello!, First thing ...you are not alone in this!. I am scared to fly too but i still go on the planes and fly. It is only way to go. I cant let the fear stop me or allow it to control me. there are alot of mechanisms to cope with it. for me, I would probably take gravol to help me to relax with my stomach and feel relaxed. I usually get word find or seek book to help me focus on the book only instead of focusing on the plane itself because it would only manifest my fear more. I think very positively too. and feel that god is with you always and this helps alot too! and think repeatedly that nothing bad will happen to you. do whatever that will help you to relax and enjoy the trip. please feel free to ask me any questions pertaining to this. Good luck and may god be with you on the trip!

Well, suck on a mint during takeoff and landing. That's the worst. (Ya know when ur ears pop?) If your ears do pop, plug your nose and attempt to blow air out through your nose, it relieves the pain. But it is not too terribly painful.
