Long exposure. Keep the shutter open for 1 sec.

The light trails appear when the source of light moves between the time the shutter opens and the time the shutter closes.

You can achieve the same effect also by using a camera with adjustable shutter speed, and which can be mounted on a tripod. If you are using low shutter speeds, you'll have to hold the camera still for longer, which becomes very difficult.. hence the tripod...

Select a very dimly lit room... otherwise, your film will get over exposed.

A cool way you can get light trails is to use a laser pointer and "paint" whatever you want on the photograph. I tried this as an experiment and it came out really good.. Just pointed my cam at a wall in a dark room, and "painted" whatever I wanted on the wall using a laser.. all the while, my shutter was open.. I painted for something like 5 minunes... and it came out just fine...

I really take offense to the person who posted that photography is not an art form. What kind of antiquated ingnorance is this to say something so narrow minded. The use of the term art medium is, to say the least, misleading, for it is the artist that creates a work of art not the medium. It is the artist in photography that gives form to content by a distillation of ideas, thought, experience, insight and understanding. Of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask "how," while others of a more curious nature will ask "why." Personally, I have always preferred inspiration to information. If "how" is all you are concerned about in terms of art, then I have a piaint-by-numbers painting that my 5 year old cousin painted that looks like a Van Gogh that I can sell you. Go back to art school and study some more, or go back to your mall job selling Thomas Kincade prints to grandmas. Since when has art been about medium or about how??

You can use a camera on tripod with longer shetter speed, (once your shutter speeds get up to 1/4 sec or longer you'll NEED a tripod)or move the camera while taking pix(though it will blur everything in pix

using an adjustable lens mounted on an SLR body, set your shutter speed on low setting such as 1/8 up to 1/30 and with lens opening f2.8 or lower. mount your camera on a tripod while shooting. better still, handheld your camera, position yourself at a distance perpendicular to the direction of the incoming car. frame your subject as it appraoach your position, press the shutter as it passes infront of you and FOLLOW THRU, that's how you achieve a glowing effect of moving car.

You must have a camera where you can control the shooter speed... and a tripod. Try with long exposure times (like 30 seconds or so) and go on.

The trick is car lights move, while your camera and background don't, so it "draws" these lines.

Hope it helps.
