Here are a few questions that I have always wondered about cops...

-How do cops know where to go when they are called to...let's say a residence? I guess some cops are very familiar with the areas they work in, but i have lived in the same city for 22 years and couldn't tell you every street. Maybe navigation systems? If so do they put the coordinates of the residence in or is it uploaded into their computer system by satelite?

-Do cops get to keep the standard beretta they are issued or do they turn them in at the end of their shifts?

-Do cops always use the same police cars or do they rotate them with other officers? (I know in some smaller cities they get to take them home, but havn't seen that in too many places.)

In the County I live in:

There are mapping sytems in some of the cars. Also dispatch can help if there are any problems. For the most part, just knowing the patroling area is how some of the more experienced officers do it.

The guns that are issued are kept by the officers. There is a record kept of each gun that an officer uses.

The cars are also registered to each officer. The officer is responsible for all maintenance and up keep. If there is a problem with the car, then they can request to have a mechanic look at it. There is a mechanic employed by the county that works on county vehicles. The officer then gets a temporary vehicle.

In my city, when you are given a call, there is a map grid number included in the call. The grid number corresponds to a page in a department map book that is in each car. So, if you aren't familiar with the area, you can flip to that page in your book and it shows the area. Our computers in the cars also have GPS and map software, so when you get your call..you can press a button and it'll pull up a map of the area.

Our department issues Glocks and the officers take them home.

The property detail maintains all the vehicles. When an officer comes in for his/her shift, he/she checks out a car from property. It's a different car every day (unless you have a certain car you like and can get a property clerk to give it to you if it's available).

im not a cop but as far as i know...

They can find a residence with no problem, they have a pretty advanced computer in their vehicles with maps (along their other uses), even then most calls are on the same people that they deal with on a basis, so they already know where they are going usually.

Yes they keep their guns as they go home and clean them.

I don't know if they keep the same cars, but it would make more sense if they did as the officer would get more use to his car and how it performs

its just a matter of being familiar with your beat. it comes with experience. Cities that are on a grid system are extra helpful as the street numbers have greater meaning, than cities that are not. GPS and maps also help. Most of it is experience. When you spend 40+ hours a week driving around responding to calls, you catch on quick.

the service weapon varies from agency to agency. Officers usually take their service weapon home with them.

Cars are usually assigned to specific beats or squads. Some departments have take home cars. It really depends on the circumstances.
