The other answer is incorrect.

The Ambassador is head of a diplomatic mission. This may be an embassy or it could be a mission to an international organization such as the United Nations or a UN Specialized Agency or the World Trade Organization, etc. In the absence of an Ambassador who is the head of an embassy there is a chargé d'affaires ("ad interim" or "a.i." means "temporary)

The High Commissioner is the equivalent of an Ambassador at a diplomatic mission (a High Commision) of one British Commonwealth country to another.

A Consul General is the head of a Consulate General (a large Consulate, which would usually be a branch of an embassy in another city).

Confusingly, a Consul General (or Consul) can also be the title of a person in charge of consular affairs at an Embassy; and sometimes a country will have a consulate as its consular section of embassy in a capital city.

A Deputy High Commissioner (and a Deputy High Commission) are the equivalent of a Consul (or Consul General) and a Consulate (General) of one Commonwealth country in another.

Andy's answer is almost correct, but Consulate General is never a part of the Embassy. Consulate General of the country in question is a foreign representation of the ministry of foreign affairs of the country in question, focused on human rights, consular, commercial, human and other affairs. Consul General is always independent from the ambassador of the country in question. usually consulates general are in the biggest (and/or most important cities) while embassies are exclusively in the capitals, ecxept some of countries, like Israel f.e.

important is that Consul General is a name of the positon, i.e. head of the consular mission. other members of consulate generals are other consuls, secretaries etc. consul general may have a diplomatic rank of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary. so, it means that ambassador is not only position, but a highest rank in diplomacy. abmassador, apponted as head of the embassy may not have a rank of ambassador extraordiary and plenipotentiary. so is life....generally andy's answer is correct, the other one is wrong.
