meeting new people, and starting a new school its hard for her, or for everyone their first year of college. But just a couple of weeks ago she got a phone call from her step mom(who she gets along with) that her healthy living dad was dead on the couch when she got home from work. She missed a week of school and is now stressed and trying to catch up but is doing bad bc she says she is so sad about her dads sudden death. Her family history is no one ever finishing college and today she told me she wanted to go home next semester and save up money and come back...I didnt know what to tell her she is so smart and her dad never gave her the choice but to finish college, but a week after her dads death her mom tells her she is getting a divorced with her step dad. So she is really worried about her mom and money...I told her that if she left she will probably never come back and she agreed but i dont know what to do to get her to stay...help...

You need to sit down and have a heart to heart with her. tell her you care about her and her future. You understand the grief she is going through. Ask her to think of her father. How proud he would be to see her in school, to watch her suceed, as with the rest of her family. By continuing her education she will be able to contribute to the famalies financial future so much more than she would be able to now. You need to offer her support, offer her encouragement and urge her to stay not because you want her there but because it would make her father, her family, you and herself proud. It can be very hard tocatch uo once you get behind. You could also suggest talking to her proffesors and explaining to them the loss she is dealing with and they would probably be happy to offer her extensions and undertsand her situation. Good luck.

There is not really anything you can do to get her to stay. You can be her friend and support her emotionally through this obviously very difficult time. She's obviously very distracted from her schoolwork. But she needs to decide for herself. She knows what she can and can't handle. She may need a semester off, even if money is tight. When I was in college, I took my time. I took semesters off and still went back and eventually finished and got my degree. Help convince her that she CAN come back when she's ready.
