Your bird is dependant upon you for everything. Therefore, it is very important that you provide all the necessary things that your pet needs for health, vitality and quality of life.
Regularly wash out your birds environment.
Provide clean drinking water every day.
Your bird needs more than just seeds for food. So whilst it is paramount to provide a quality mix of bird food every day, it is essential also each day to vary the diet with a different supplement.
Try these suggestions:-
Salad Cress - Peas - Apple - Celery - Courgette - Sweetcorn - Watercress - Boiled Rice - Parsley Sprig - Grapes - Cucumber - Dandelion Leaves - Broccoli - Broard Beans - Carrott - Finger of bread soaked in water - Mashed Boiled Egg (shell also) - Tomatoes - Lettuce - Cooked Pasta - Radishes (leaves also)
Millet Spray is an especially loved treat for birds, but it is important not to give this too often as they will refuse to eat their regular seed in favour of it!
It is best not to give Cabbage as this can cause digestive problems.
Other important requirements for your birds health are Cuttlefish Bone, Grit, and Iodine Block. These are necessary for your pets bones and digestive system.
Your bird will occasionally enjoy a dish of tepid water to splash in.
Keep your pet away from draughts and direct sunlight. House plants, chemical cleaners, polish, & hair sprays, etc are highly toxic and dangerous to your bird.
A bird in a cage on its own will need your companionship for the large part of the day, unless you provide many distractions such as toys, mirrors, swings , lots perches and possibly a background sound like a radio. Birds are naturally inquisitive and playful animals and will become listless, distressed, destructive and possibly aggressive if bored and frustrated with their existence.
Your pets wings may have been clipped so flight will be restricted though not prevented and so doors, windows and other potential hazards should be taken into account before letting your bird out of its cage. Allow your pet out of its cage regularly as this exercise will keep them interested in their environment and alert. (Have your birds wings clipped approximately every three months).
To gain a subdued bird let it accompany you in your daily routine. Perching on your shoulder or head your pet will enjoy the variety of the surroundings as you move about freely. You will be able with patience and determination train your bird to talk and perform tricks.
To train your pet to talk you will need to provide close and regular contact, repeating the same phrase consistently. Your bird will be unlikely to talk if it has the companionship of another bird, or if it has too many toys, especially a mirror! However, as mentioned before these accessories are essential to a bird that will be left on its own over long periods of time.
Birds can be taught to mimic tricks you teach by the action of a finger. Reward positive behaviour with a tasty treat..
With a healthy lifestyle in which you take good care of your pet, play with it and make its life interesting, your bird will likely live a long and happy life.

First rule about budgies: They don't need gravel. Gravel causes crop problems and parrots tend to eat only gravel when they're sick. Gravel is good for finches, doves, pigeons, quail and chickens. It should not be given to parrots. However, cuttle bone is safe and is required if your hen is laying eggs. They also need a diet rich in veggies, fruit and some seeds and pellets. Don't give them avocado, chocolate or caffeine. Those are toxic to birds as well. Gravel covered perches cause foot infections. If you use them, use one and make sure your perches are of different sizes to prevent foot problems.
Okay, now that is out of the way, I can brag a bit, LOL! Budgies are mischievous little stinkers that have a lot of energy and attitude. They don't have a loud voice but they like to chatter all day. I find both males and females mimic equally well. My female, Buzzsaw, knows how to mimic my male breeding cockatiels song and dance, right down to banging her beak on the perch. It's a hoot! Most budgies are not hand fed, so if you get one you'll have to work at making them tame. If you can find a breeder that hand feeds their birds, expect a slightly more expensive bird but one that is supposed to be one of the best pet companions available :-) .
Watch their Beaks! They love to shred! That means protecting your walls as budgies can strip and entire wall of wallpaper in a matter of minutes. I lost a small bulletin board to my stinker, Buzzsaw. And a book. And several posters. It's best if you can give your guy some out-of -cage flying. The bathroom is great for this as long as the mirror is covered, the toilet lid is put down and toothbrushes and soap is removed from curious beaks. My birds hate baths but they will spash around in a bowl if the mood strikes them. You might be able to shower with your bird by letting the bird sit on you while the water bounces off you. A direct shower spray is a bit too much for a small parrot.
I do agree with the one person who said they're not as hardy as other birds. I've lost more budgies than any other bird, with the exception of baby cockatiels without their feathers in. Never keep your bird in the kitchen and really watch the non stick coated cooking utensils. It's toxic to birds, period. The up side is that if you can find a good breeder and you feed your guy a decent diet your budgie can live 10-15 years! Most don't live as long due to illness and poor nutrition. Buzzsaw is pushing 5 years while her cage mate, Mygirl is 6. I don't know what I'd do without them !
Baby budgies have a purple colored nose until they're 5-6 months of age. Then it turns either a bright blue (a boy) or a crusty brown (a girl). Some feather colors will make a boy's nose, also called a cere, a funky purple. It's darker than the baby budgie's bright purple nose, so you can still tell males from females. Baby budgies also have stripes on their head that go all the way down to their beaks. As they grow older the bars will disappear and their face will be mostly unbarred.

Budgies are playful and fun to have as a pet. They enjoy toys and always end up completing some trick or task that will get you to laughing after they get use to the surroundings of their new home. One is good, but two is better. Then when your not around the one won't get lonely. They make mirrors for them to see themselves thinking it is another bird, however that's just not the same. Then if you have a male bird he ends up wanting to rub his bottom on the mirror trying to make love. If you decide later to get him a mate, then he might not want to give up his mirror or if you take it away, he still might not have anything to do with other bird.
Birds need fresh feed each day along with gravel. This gravel helps them digest the food since their stomachs can not do this on their own.
Make sure you have fresh water for them each day as well.
They should have a cuddle bone on the side of the cage to help keep their beaks filed down.
They also need gravel covers for their perch to help keep their nails sharpened down.
You also should get a bird protector box for the side of the cage to keep the mites away.
Try and keep their cage cleaned out at least once a week. This helps keep them from getting sick.
I use to raise birds myself and manage a pet shop. If you have any more questions on the matter I will be glad to help you out if I can.

Well, I've had a couple. From my experience, they are not as hardy as some other birds like large parrots and cockateils. I had one die when we burnt a pan in the kitchen (fumes I guess hurt him) and I had another die of unknown etiology. They were friendly birds, and one actually would mimic my whistleing and started to talk a little bit...just said "Jade" "Pretty Jade" etc. Sam was not so friendly, but was not socialized. They are beautiful birds and can add a lot of color to your living area.
