your dog is frightened of these things. You'll have to be patient with her. Hold her and talk quietly with her when she is upset. Eventually she will learn that these things will not hurt her, but until then she is frightened. No one can explain to her that a thunderstorm is loud, but she is safe from the storm in the house. Every storm, fire crackers, sirens , etc are all new to dogs when they are puppies.

the best thing you can do for the dog is not make a big deal out of it. DO NOT hug and hold your dog when this happens as you are just reinforcing this bad habit. it is ok to sit next to the animal and talk in a quite voice...remember they take their que from you if you don,t make it a big deal it time they hopefully will get over it...good luck

You think YOU have a problem? I have a Pitbull that does the exact same thing... lol!

What works for us is to basically ignore the behaviour. We have our dogs inside where they are safe, so we don't need to reinforce the "I want to climb on your lap to be cuddled" behaviour - she weighs 37kgs!!!

There are "desensitising" programs that you can buy to try to help your dog overcome the problem - but if your dog is picking up barometric pressure changes or the like - some silly CD just won't work. My dog knows the difference...

Like people, dogs can be afraid of loud noises. My Cavalier King Charles sits in my lap until the thunder stops.

he probably has not been exposed to alot of stuff so he is scared. try socializing him by taking him on walks, change it up, somedays walk around your block , other days to the park, etc. the more he is exposed to new stuff the more confident he will be. plus it is always good exercise. also you can go to your vet and they can give you pills-sedatives to give your dog during thunderstorms, 4th of july, etc. they dont knock them out completely, just get them feeling mellow so they dont care so much what is going on...

Dogs are hyper sensative to sounds and smells, so this is not unusual. They are usually keenly atuned to their owner, and can also sense when you are discomforted. As you react calmly during these events and both comfort and encourage your dog he/she can get over it. Don't be disapointed if he/she doesn't, after all we are talking about a pet.

My uncle actually has prescription meds to give his black lab when he freaks out in a thunderstorm. I don't know if it's right to drug up a dog just to keep him quiet, but just so you're aware, that option is out there.
