I went on vacation a few months ago to St. Thomas and St. Maarten and have been in love ever since. If I end up being successful and financially secure, I'd love to live on an island in the Caribbean (or at least have a vacation home there). Is this stupid? I said it the other day and my father said "Now why would you say something stupid like that?"

No its not stupid, however a lot of people who are unaware of how life in the Caribbean really is believe that living there is taking a step back and it isn't because practically anything you can find on the Mainland US and in most developed nations is readily available in the islands.

Choose wisely on your island and research their lifestyle and be prepared for the changes.

It is not stupid. Many people from around the world have houses in the Caribbean that they use as vacation homes. In St. Maarten Christmas time is Celebrity heaven. Once you can afford it go for it.

Well, if someone had told me I would be living on a Caribbean island 3 years ago I would have laughed. But that was always a dream of my husbands so when he saw a job advertised we agreed that he should apply for it and here we are in Barbados.
We are coming up 2 years here now - it is a wonderful life experience but certainly no holiday. Nice vacation spot but lots of challenges if you live here. So maybe go with the "vacation home".
We look forward to returning to Canada when we retire.

When i retire am definitely going to live on one.Its not stupid, not at all,as long as it is some were as far away from all the stresses that one faces here, its worth it besides property prices are less than half of what you would pay in the USA.Besides from the weather and a few other occasional stuff, that's common and even here in the GREAT USA you have problem that are even far greater than all those little islands combine.Far one you don't have to worry about terrorists.
Its one of the best thoughts you could ever make mention of.

Depends on what nationality you have. If you have an EC passport then Aruba has appeal or maybe Cyprus. Both have nice people and a good phone system, Cyprus being marginally the better but also more expensive. Whoops nearly forgot the lovely Island of Malta. A little cooler but still delightful and almost everybody there speaks English With a US passport then maybe the US Virgin islands.

I live in the Caribbean, and trust me there is no better place to want to live. Some people will say that it is dangerous and all, but it ain't more dangerous than living anywhere else. Huricanes? not all the islands get them. Aruba Bonair and Curacao have not seen a full huricane in over 100 years. and even if, U get plenty of warning to an incomming huricane, and there is plenty of time to get out of the way or prepare.

so go for it

When and if you become well off to still want that...consider renting a house for a few months a year. I lived on an island, it gets expensive and old. Everything had to be brought in, the milk and eggs were powdered and everything costs the earth. Too there are many alcoholics and sex maniacs caused from Island life...illegitamacy is the norm...otherwise enjoy it for its laid back culture.

No, it's not stupid.

When I went to Barbados for the first time, I wanted to live there, I went again the 2nd time and stayed with a friend, I still wanted to live there, and I was hoping to find a place to stay, but my friend, Kemar, and his family said I could live with them. Whenever I come down, I go home for vacation, if you get what I'm saying. I've got that family. :) So it's like I have 2 homes.

Not at all stupid. But - its not like vacation when u live there. Things that we take for granted - decent medical care - reasonably intelligent police - social safety nets - often these things are not what you may be used to. Police do a good job protecting the tourist areas - but - if you get off the beaten path?
Keep your head up.

OMG, I can't believe your father said something like that to you. Jennifer, follow your dreams and live a passionate life. Don't listen to the naysayers. Of course, there are always going to be obstacles to success, but you have the power to achieve anything. Just look at Oprah Winfrey, she grew up in extremely poor conditions - she was sexually abused several times when she was young, she was a criminal and was sent to juvenile hall a few times, she gave birth to a still-born when her "boyfriend" left her. She grew up in the ghetto with her mom. Despite of all her obstacles, she still managed to become a billionaire who contibutes to society now. Get this through your mind: YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO! You can live in the carribean islands. Hopefully, I'll get to meet you there one day. Good luck!
