An ATM card generally only works in an ATM. Some POS terminals will process them, though. A debit card is processed like a credit card. Any merchant that accepts that card brand will accept your debit card. A debit card transfers the funds directly from your bank account to the merchant's bank.

Both are different from the banks perspective. With a ATM card u can access ur fund /account in the bank and the bank charges u a standard fee for using it. With debit card the bank actually encourages u to spend and for every transaction u R charged. This way it is like a credit card. Though ur account is debited instantly and money from ur account is transfered, U still pay for the transaction charges. The bank inturn charge U as well as the Seller. That is how the bank makes money. So instead of debit card A credit card is smarter. In credit cards the bank actually fleece U without ur knowledge. So watch carefully.

Depends on what you call it. Some people call there ATM cards debit cards and vice versa.

Technically, an ATM card is only valid in the ATM. They are not issued by credit card companies and only work in the ATM from the bank that issued the card.

A debit card has been issued from the bank and a credit card company. It can be used any where a credit card is accepted and at the ATM.

Debit cards can be used like Master Card and Visa, but without the bill. ATM cards are usually limited to ATM functions. You have to stop spending when the money's gone just the same, instead of building up huge unpayable bills!!

As a bank employee, WE define an ATM card as a card that can only be used at an ATM. A debit card will have a VISA or MasterCard logo and can be used anywhere VISA or MasterCard are accepted.

Here is my interruption.
Atm cards with just the bank logo is restricted to that bank. Atm and debit cards with Cirrus, Maestro, Plus, Star, NYCE can be used at merchant and atms with a pin if the merchant take those cards. Now a debit card with a MasterCard or Visa can be used at most merchants that take those cards in addition to Cirrus, Maestro, Plus, Star, NYCE.

Cirrus, Plus, Maestro are international debit networks.

Some merchants do not take pin based debit cards but usually take the Visa/MasterCard debit card.

As far as I know, it's the same card. It may be called an ATM card when you are using it at the ATM, and a debit card when you are using it in a store. But it's the same card.
