Usually the people who do it have babies that don't appear feminine, or don't possess qualities of female beauty, so they try to do whatever they can to make the baby look like a female.

"This is the most horrible thing a parent can do to their baby"
it's REALLY sad that you believe that. We all know that beating, harassing, straving, and neglecting a child is not as bad as piercing there ears!
What does it have to do with impressing others? I so WISH my mother would have gotten my ears pierced. I'm now an adult and know how painful it is. I really wish I had pierced ears. A baby will not even remember the pain later that day. The only way there going to get infected is if they are not taken care of.
Most women who have there ears pierced, had gotten them while they where VERY young. The pierced hole is NOT crooked when the child grows.

Sorry but i have to disagree with your statement. My daughters ears were done when she was 3 months old. She maybe cried for a second and then it was over. As far as infection goes an adult can get it to if not taken care of properly. Same as giving her a bath or changing diapers. It just has to be done. As far as her not wanting pierced ears later in life, just let them close back up. Ask any little girl from ages 3 - 10 if they want pierced ears and i bet nearly all will tell you they do (it's a girl thing anyways) but now they will feel the pain and probably half won't do it because of that. They'll wait til they're teens and probably do it.

Actually for babies it is not painful as the nerve endings have not developed in the ear lobes yet. If they cry it is because the noise startles them not because their ears hurt. Both of my daughters had their ears pierced at 3 months and they are both perfectly straight and neither one ever had any infections since they didn't really touch them since they had always been there...when they are older they play with the earrings because they are new. My four year old decided she doesn't want earrings anymore so we took them out...so not painful, no infections (unless parents are morons and don't properly take care of them), no crooked earrings and if the baby doesn't like them later take them out!!

I think parents pierce their baby's ears for different reasons. You're right, alot of them do do it to impress others and because they think it is fashionable, others may because it's a tribal tradition thing or part of their beliefs whilst the rest may do it thinking it's for the baby's benefit because they may want it when they are older.
Kids can always choose to take out the earrings and let the holes block up anyway... each to their own I suppose.

I had my ears pierced when I was 3 months old and I am now a healthy 32 year-old. My grandmother wanted me to remember her because she knew she was in bad health (she has since passed away) and I still look at my ears in the mirror and think of her. She died when I was 13 and ever since then I wondered why she did decide to get them pierced. I don't think it is bad to get them pierced at a young age like I did, I just think the child doesn't have a choice on if they want it or not.

Are U a parent? As a mother I pierced my daughter's ears for 2 reasons! One , because as infants they do not feel the pain, nor remember it! Second if you have ever had a daughter born with no hair, it saves on the "boy or girl" questions. It is far from status--her ears couldn't hold up the size I really wanted to get her!
Good Luck!
P.S. If infected--bad parenting

I agree. There is nothing pretty about it..it just makes them look like old ladies. Let them be babies. There is plenty of time for them to grow up.
My daughter got her ears pierced when she was 10 years old. This was something she wanted so I was more than happy to have her get it done.

Accupunture points. Its common in South India on the baby's first birthday. Its painful agreed, but the baby stops crying after some time. No, the baby will not get infected. My ears were pierced too and I am doing perfectly fine.
