Yes I was also told that whole milk is better as it has extra fat and calcium is absorbed better by there bodies. Yet now in Australia they are encouraging low fat milk for toddlers due to obesity. Wish they would make up their mind. By the way I give my boys whole milk they're aged 5 and 3 and they're not overweight.

For the same reason that formula companies added DHA and ARA (fats) to newer formulas, because fat is brain fuel. Lower fat milk has the same amount of vitamin A and D as whole milk since milk is fortified with these vitamins, it is not naturally occurring in high quantities. Lower fat milk also has the same amount of calcium since only fat is skimmed off, not minerals. So, you could give your little one 2% or even 1% if you were worried about the high saturated fat content of whole milk, but you would have to make sure they got the necessary fats for brain development elsewhere like in the yummy orange flavored Omega 3-6-9 gel caps from the health food store. Or give lots of avocado, almond butter, salmon and olive oil to name a few.

I have heard both sides of the argument. Toddlers need the extra fat... But think about your childs diet. Are they getting enough fat already? If your child eats high fat foods often they don't need the extra fat. I told my ped we were giving my one year old the fat free milk and he said "good, I prefer that" It wasn't for any other reason than convience, I like fat free, and to buy a gallon of fat free and a gallon of whole, and pick up the whole and me drink it by accedent turned my stomach. And she is actually a "bigger" child than my first was and I did the whole milk thing with her. My children eat healthy, not to say they never eat a french fry because they do, but I cook at home almost every night. But I also know that they love cheese it's and other snacks. Look close at your childs diet, talk with your ped, and decide if your child really needs the extra fat.

whole milk has more nutrients that a toddler will need in early stages of growth. You can probably change to a 2% after the age of 5 or around there. Good luck with your toddler and maybe you should drink whole milk too...just to keep up with the babe!!! :)

A higher fat content. In Tennessee starting when they are 3 yrs. old the W.I.C. program requires you to get 2% or skim milk.
