This is what their website states, what's your opinion?
"The ACLU vigorously defends peoples’ freedom to choose the religious symbols of their choice. The right of each and every American to practice his or her own religion, or no religion at all, is among the most fundamental of the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. "

Whoooaaaa!

I'm a member of the ACLU and I wanted to know why I get so much negative comments about the ACLU when I ask certain questions, especially if they can be traced to religion.

So calm down everyone. GREAT ANSWERS by the way!

This is not promoting a Godless country; it is promoting a country where God is a choice. As is choosing no God.

I would much prefer a country where God is a choice than a country like Saudi Arabia, where God is imposed on the populace.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:

Matt's comment below about the American Civil Liberties Union advocating for child sex abuse is an utter lie. I've been a member for decades, and this has never even been considered. They are supportive of gay rights, but also supportive of child abuse laws.

The ACLU seems to be over-zealous Lawyers who will take funds from anyone in thier zeal to protect our rights. Most of the Lawyers are far left, and are atheists. So they quickly see areas where the Government seems to be infringing on our rights by putting up religious symbols. The way I see it is if we had complete, freedom of religion the way the Constitution says it, we would have a right to build churches, and put up religious symbols wherever we want regardless of if we are a politician or not. If the people don't like it, vote the politicians out. But instead it's some kind of power trip that these Lawyers are on, and they believe that the rule of law is supreme over the rule of the majority. The problem with the rule of law, is that it's subject to interpretation. You can interpret the constitution and the laws any way you want, and the Supreme Court takes pride in doing that.
Occasionally the ACLU will have a good cause, and get good publicity. But for the most part they are going against what the majority of the people want, and are ignoring the will of the people. They get funded by left wing groups, who have no respect for our Constitution. It's almost like they are trying to make the Constitution some form of oppression so that people hate the Constitution. These Lawyers are only promoting thier own narrow-minded idealogical view of rights, and the constitution. They seem to have great fear for conservatives, and the majority. They help people alot, but I think they have taken it too far, and they seem to be on some kind of power trip.

The statement sounds pretty good. But, they don't live up to it. The ACLU wants prayer out of all schools, wants NO prayer before a sports event by team, players, coach, etc. They want NO Christmas displays in public places. Oh yeah, they want it called "Happy Holidays" or "Winter Holiday" and not Christmas. They want no words about God in public places including the White House, etc. "In God We Trust" taken off of our money and "One Nation Under God" taken out of the National Anthem. I could go on and on and on about their anti Christian, anti individual, and at times- anti American fundamental standards but I'd be here all night. Look at what our founding fathers felt and did;. They would tell the ACLU to do something worth wile with their time. Don't forget to send the ACLU a CHRISTMAS card. If we were forced to do as the ACLU seems to desire, the USA would begin to resemble a communist nation. Anti Christian Lunatic Underachievers =ACLU.

No, they want to preserve the right we all have to choose whatever church we feel serves our spiritual needs.

The ACLU also says on their website:

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

* Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.
* Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
* Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
* Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

We work also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor.

If the rights of society's most vulnerable members are denied, everybody's rights are imperiled.

Seems like it's promoting a nation where people can freely choose to worship how they please, without being mandated to observe just one particular faith. It's what our Forefathers honored as well. Remember, many left England because of religious persecution and zealotry, kind of like what the neocons are waging today.

God Bless the ACLU!

Hello, Ms. Agenda Girl!! They want to make sure you and I can practice what ever religion or non-religion we want without fear.

If I'm a Baptist and I apply for a job in a predominantly Methodist city, they will protect my right to work, participate in government, and to raise my children as I see fit without being descriminated against because Im not "one of them".

I agree with them. With groups referring to themselves as the Moral Majority, and Religious Right, someone has to stick up for people who believe that anyone can worship what and how they wish, so long as they and the gov't don't try to push ANY aspect of it on the rest of the country.

The gov't is obligated to keep itself away from any type of religious expression, in order to not give the impression of supporting one above any other. They don't, and thanks to the churches influence, they can get away with it. Examples include, beginning congressional sessions with a prayer, the phrase "one nation under god" on money, and the "under god" phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance.

They don't want it to be godless, as you claim. They just want you to leave others alone about it.

the C stands for constitutional, and it their aim to see the constitution is followed. Many christians think thatas a group they are anti christian, and no doubt some individuals in that group are but as usual it is not a good idea to bash them cuz some of them do not deserve it.

as you can see above they are sometimes misjudged they in fact fight for the constitution not against it

Today the ACLU may defend someone you don't like. But tomorrow they may be defending YOUR rights. They defended Rush Limbaugh's rights on his drug arrest.

Where were they when prayer was taking out of schools? They seem to be a pick and choose organization of their own agendas not for everyone else.
