Good hand washing is your first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses - and not just the common cold. More serious illnesses such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, influenza, hepatitis A, and most types of infectious diarrhea can be stopped with the simple act of washing your hands.

To minimize the germs passed around your family, make frequent hand washing a rule for everyone, especially:

before eating and cooking
after using the bathroom
after cleaning around the house
after touching animals, including family pets
after visiting or taking care of any sick friends or relatives
after blowing one's nose, coughing, or sneezing
after being outside (playing, gardening, walking the dog, etc.)
It has been estimated that proper hand-washing could eliminate close to half of all cases of foodborne illness.
Women wash their hands more often than men (74% versus 61%).

A study of 305 school children found that youngsters who washed their hands 4 times a day had 24% fewer sick days due to respiratory illness and 51% fewer days due to upset stomach

Because of the normal flora (microorganisms) of the skin vs those of the intestines/genital areas. Basically, we have little organisms that grow in and on our bodies. When they remain where they are supposed to be, then that's fine, but when they get to other parts of the body, then we can get sick. For instance, in the intestines, there are bacteria that help us with digestion. When these get on our hands (after using the toilet) if these got into our mouths and reproduced, this could get us very sick, although they were happily coexisting with us when they were in our intestines.

Well, it's the bacteria... apart from the fact that our hands would be all mucky and icky if we didn't wash them every time we went to use the restroom! :o)

everyone should wash their hands, before eating, handling and preparing food, after working with our hands, after using the restroom - public washrooms are a hotbed of disease. have you ever watched how many people leave without using SOAP and WATER on their hands? then they shake someone's hands, and that person selects fruit or food by hand, leaving behind items they've squeezed or touched. and i don't even want to mention what other people do with their hands, and without washing, make contact with others, or food, or the clothes they don't purchase but you do... (don't put your newborn infant in store bought clothing or in anything which might have been "handled" without washing your purchases thoroughly - babies have not the immune system resistance others have).

when we touch items - food, clothing, glassware & dishes, EVERYTHING else - we leave and pick-up unseen bacteria. About three years ago, the city of Toronto was "closed" for business when SARS came to town. It cost MILLIONS of dollars in lost revenue, not to mention people who lost their lives. and most of this could have been prevented by common sense personal hygiene. so please, Wash your hands regularly with Soap and Water, and teach your children proper hygiene.

Human waste contains bacteria which if reintroduced back into the body via contact with food can cause serious illness.

So you and others dont get sick from your waste. People can get very sick when a person doesnt wash their hands and prepares food.
