I should mention that "Cars" the movie was sort of the theme.

I do have pin the tail on the donkey and am planning a pinata too.

is there a theme?
pinatas are always good, but stuff them with toys too not just candy!!! A HUGE HIT!!!

if its ouside...do some sort of buiding thing...get logs or blocks divide into 2 groups and let them at it!

hiking is always good too!
if its inside....bob for apples
or pass a ball between their knees without using hands

or..try putting different textured things in paper bags and have them reach in to guess what it is ( grapes...peas...cotton...marbles)

There is a website where you can order sand candy and make your own pixi sticks. It is like edible sand art. You could also rent one of those inflatable jump things. Do a scavenger hunt in the yard. If you live in an appropriate area, have everyone bring their favorite riding toy and ride out side (weather permitting). Of course there is always the old standbys: pin-the tail on the donkey and the pinata. You could roast marshmallows outside or make smores. That is a fun activity. Also there is the idea of an ice cream bar. Buy a bunch of favorite toppings and a couple of ice creams and let the kids make their own sundae's. Good Luck!

Start with some music games like "Londen Bridge is Falling down" or maybe going with the things you jump in. I call them jumpys and you can just rent them by the hour. There can also be the Mexican game where every one hits the object flying in the air and when it is cracked candy comes out (I know what it is called but I sure can't spell it and I won't even try). You can also do pin the tail on the donkey. There are always fun games like bobbing for apples, small apples. You can also play the milk pins on the grass. It's like bowling but not. You can also do a theme thing and oh hey, do the horse shoe throwing game! Oh that sounds fun! I'm getting excited for you...Well I hope I helped...

Well, I have 5 kids and always throw a party.
A craft if always fun for them, try Oriental Trading company for ideas. Nothing to complicated. Maybe something theme related to the party.
Pinata they always love, fill with toys as well as some candy.
They have this wheel of fortune wheel they spin and it tells them what to do, if they are successful they chose a prize from the treasure chest, you can do this with all the games, they'll love it !
There is a game I did at the last party. It's really a contest. You tie string to donuts and hang from cieling, door thingy or something high, a tree if outside. And whoever eats the whole donut first, with hands behind their backs and blind folded wins !

Pin the Tail on whatever is always a crown pleaser.
Musical Chairs, Simon Says.
The library also have books on this subject.
Good Luck !

been there done that, like parents used to say to me are u CRAZY--my simple answer is yes, but on with ideas...
one game i had the children play was the "fireman relay"

i took old adult clothes, made two piles using the same clothes in each pile: i.e, each pile had a huge sweatshirt, sweat pants a pair of winter boots and a fire man hat. Divide the kids into two teams, make the sound of a fire siren , one kid from each team runs to the pile of clothes has to put all the clothes on and then get back to the next one in line, take off all the clothes, and then the next one puts them on and has to run back to the place where the pile was and take them off--thats why i used sweatpants and sweatshirts no buttons or ties for the little ones, they had a blast doing this, and it was hysterical to watch..

the little plastic fire helmets are a cute little take home prize too

keeping with the fireman theme, go to the dollar store buy a package or two of sponges, dampen them (not ringing wet) and have two pix of a fire on poster board, and let them throw wet sponges at it --to put the fire "out" the wet sponge leaves a mark on the poster board and at the end of the time the team whose fire is most wet (out) is the winner.

musical chairs is always an old stand-by along with hot potato

a fire engine pinata is a nice touch

or to go a whole other route, usually boys like army or soldier stuff
you could still play the same "clothing game"

bozo buckets--but give everyone a prize no matter which bucket they get to

throw a ball (any kind) through a hula hoop or into a box with holes cut out

i could go on & on & on but i know your good imagination has probably kicked in by now and so you probably dont need any more babbling from me have fun & HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUR SON...

Another idea is to buy cheaper packages of tshirts and let everyone put their handprints on the tshirt and write their name under their hands. Something to take home and fun to do. You could always prewrite something on there about the birthday child.

I've had a birthday party for my children every year and its a week apart. It is sometimes crazy but the kids love it so to me its worth it. Two hours is a long time, only time I had them that long was a skating party so you could have the party at a skating rink and still play games and skate as well.

Think carnival style games. Put out a plastic pool for a "fishing" game using prizes and magnets. Or have the kids throw the line over a curtain area and when they reel the line in they will have a prize. (Hooked on by a helper) Have a bean bag toss for prizes. Small bean bags tossed into buckets. My husband bought the animal balloons (the long skinny ones) and made simple animals for the kids. They loved it! The local craft store had a book to learn from, he kinda got into it for awhile. Thought we were gonna live on tips for awhile. LOL. Try the fish bowl toss with the small plastic bowls, give them goldfish for prizes. Parents may not like it, but the kids will get a kick out of it. Get a brave soul to have whip cream pies tossed at them. Do a costume theme. Kids love to get dressed up. Happy Birthday to your son!

Five year olds need a bunch of short activities.

Crafts are usually good.

i.e. Maybe you can have them make 'license plates" with letter and number stickers of their name and age on bits of cardboard or cut up styrofoam meat tray rectangles.

Maybe have HotWheel or Matchbox car races of diffrent types, with each kid having a different car for all the races. (Encourage participation and sportsmanship more than winning, and reward those.)

Race Ideas:
Racing down a ramp without falling off, with the 'ramp' being a piece of lumber or other skinny-ish piece of wood propped somewhat steeply from chair to floor
Holding a popsicle stick between their teeth and 'pushing' their race car to the finish line without using hands.
Trying to 'blow' their cars across a table with straws.

(You may want to try out some of these before party day, to make sure they aren't to frustrating for the kids who will be there.)

I'll be watching your answers....I have a soon to be 5 yr old son too.

One game we are going to play is the balloon stomp. Blow up one balloon for each child, then tie it to their ankle with a string, then have the kids try to stomp everyone else's balloon. It is a lot if fun to watch!!

Freeze dance, musical chairs, arts and crafts projects

I dont think that you can really fill up 2 hours with activities to be honest.
