You can get a small collar the day you get your puppy, just make sure you loosen it as the puppy grows (get a bigger one later if needed). All dogs grow until they are 2yrs (up for 1 yr, then out for the 2nd). Some dogs grow slow, and some dogs like the Great Dane grow fast. Our 8 month old is over 100 lbs!. Your puppy should have had it's first set of shots at 6 weeks. It will be due again at 10 weeks, then the last set at 14 weeks. DON'T MISS ANY SHOTS!!!!
It should be OK to take your puppy out as long as it has had at least one set of shots...I usually wait until the second set before I took mine out to Petco or such. As far as taking your puppy outside to house break, start the first day you get your puppy.

1. depending on the dog, you can get a collar right away. I would get one with a lot of stretch - for a Shih tzu pup, try a cat collar
2. not sure - about 8 months I would think they would be close to full grown size
3. This is the question I can answer! When the puppy series of shots is complete. Parvo and corona are very contagious and puppies are very susceptible to these diseases. They need their shots before they go out into public with other dogs - especially if you want to be very conservative with the puppy and its health care. I personally don't even put my pups down on the floor in the vets office - think about it - this is where people bring sick dogs! Puppies immune systems are not fully developed.
Otherwise, take the puppy outside to go the bathroom in your yard.

First of all - you will love ShihTzu's they are great dogs. However, they are really stubborn little farts - so don't start something unless you want to continue it forever. So definitely buy an inexpensive collar and start right from the first potty training them. If you say to them, "Let's go potty" - they will learn that phrase and it really helps them potty train. The other thing is that these little dogs are serious chow hounds - you can get them to do anything for a little treat - so reward them with praise and a tiny bit of food when they potty outside, and they will really work hard for you to be good.

You will need to take a washcloth and wash their faces after they eat - so their little beards stay clean - start this from the very first, and also wipe their little corners of their eyes - and then they will learn this routine and won't fight you on it.

They are serious nappers, but love to run and fetch - but only short distances, and only soft toys or toys with squeakers. I have never gotten one to play with a ball or a frisbee. That's just not their thing. They love to lay on something soft on the floor - like a fluffy towel or blanket. Good luck with your new baby!!!!

You can put a collar on your puppy anytime. Usually around six weeks or eight to get them use to one.

Puppies aren't fully grown till about two years.

You can start taking your puppy outside now. Just take it in less traffic places for right now till you get him his first shots.

Don't forget to worm him around six weeks old or so.

You might want to get your puppy use to being combed at this younger age as well. Then later when he gets older and he needs groomed it will be alot easier.

I just got a puppy myself. He loves to go outside and he is only about five weeks old. I already have him in training..so he can learn to go outside to use the bathroom and at this age they follow you so when he gets older he will know to stay close to your side and not run off. The potty training will take a little while, but he will get the hang of it.

I use to manage a pet shop. I had people wanting me to train their puppies for them, but then they would miss them so that did not last long. But, I usually have good luck with training.
Enjoy your new little one.

I have a puppy that is almost 6 months old and you can put a collar on your puppy now. you can also take your dog outside now. I took mine outside when I first got her nad it didn't hurt her. a puppy has to have a total of 4 boosters shots and a rabies. they recommend getting them spayed/neutered at 6 months. and they start heartworm pills when you take it to the vet.
