Good pans have copper bottoms, because it lets the heat spread more evenly than other metals. The black was just tarnish and burnt dirt, and will come back with use.

The black part was cooked on grease that was not properly cleaned off before. Apparently the fire got it so hot it could no longer adhere to the pot. Copper is often used as a bottom coating for pots because it's an excellent conductor of heat (and electricity, but we'll leave that for another time). It helps to spread the heat evenly across the bottom of the pan so it's not concentrated in a ring that could scorch the food. Copper is a fairly soft metal and can be easily scraped away, so in the future be sure to use a 'soft scrub' cleanser and a white nylon scrubbing pad on those pots. SOS and other steel wool pads will wear it away in no time.

Sounds like you burnt all the crud off the bottom. Most of the better pots are copper bottomed. A good way to clean copper bottomed pot is with salt and lemon juice.

Buy copper cleaner at grocery store. If you have copper bottom pans (usually expensive), they are dirty and clean them with this cleaner, it works easily.
However, if you have a pan with a copper layer meshed into the middle between to other metals, then you just burned the bottom off your can. You can look at it and tell if it's supposed to be that way or not.

they were probably copper to begin with. I suggest taking a scouring pad ( s.o.s ) to remove all the black which is probably just built up carbon. Pots and pans with copper on the bottom are said to be better at conducting heat.

The pot will be ok but it probably cooked better with the crud on the bottom. It was "seasoned".
