What do you mean hostile? Barks a lot? Growls, shows teeth?
Standing still is the best way to start out. Never put your hand out! Keep your hands at your side and let him come to you to smell you. If you bend down, or lay down, you could get your face bit! Let the dog smell you for as long as he wants...don't try to pet him yet. When he comes to you without being hesitant, you can try to give him a treat. If after a couple of weeks, it may not be worth the danger you are putting yourself in...is this a stray?

Right be still be confident,do not make eye contact and if you can win his confidence enough for him to come and sniff you, you are making progress. If you are able to leash and walk him that is the best way to 'Bond'. It is important you be calm and confident, this dog needs to veiw you as a leader and strong while calm.* Do not feed him if he his hostile or agressive toward you, *** This will be rewarding the hostile behavior*** only feed him if he cools out.

Feeding is the best way, it keeps those teeth busy. If you do not have food, stand still, hold your hands flat, sloowwlly. Talk calmly to it. If it senses fear you will end up losing an appendage when they pry the mongrel off of you. Good Luck

Buckshot?

Seriously, just show him you ain't running. Talk calmly, lower your hand, with palm up, below the height of his head. squat slowly to get on his level. Do not make any sudden moves. Let him sniff your hand.

We are talking about a chihuahua, yes?

Put your hand out, palm up, to let him smell you.
Also, bow down. (Ideally, lay down.) Otherwise, your being taller than the dog might seem to portray a threatening tone. Get down to his level, or even lower, and the dog will be nice.

stand still and let them sniff you, or if you want to pet it put your hand out palm up and let the sniff your hand. if you go slow and let them come to you then they will feel less threatened. if they don't warm up to you and get obviously more and more angry then let him be and walk away slowly.
