My mother-in-law was just diagnosed with luekemia. She was in her 4th day of chemo when she began to dramatically get worse. They stopped her chemo and now she seems to be doing better.

like any other drugs, every individual reacts differently to chemotherapy....since its her 4th day already...its not an allergic reaction...its more of her body unable to tolerate the side effects...

Yes

people can be allergic to chemotherapy

However - chemotherapy harms many human cells (including the cancer cells) so people are often a little unwell when on chemotherapy and so may get better when they come off it.

It is a tricky balance the oncologist has to strive for - kill the cancer without hurting the host

Yes, people can be allergic. Usually it is the actual drug they are being given in chemotherapy that they are allergic to. A good friend of mine actually went into shock from an allergic reaction to one of the drugs. The doctors changed it and she started reacting better to the treatment!

I believe you can be allergic to anything that comes into contact with your body, whether on the skin or inside the body.

An allergy means that your body thinks the chemical or item is a foreign object that must be fought off. Similar to fighting a germ or bug you get when you get a cough or infection, your body will fight anything it perceives as dangerous.

There are even parts of the body that get attacked by the body system that fights infections or germs. MS is a disease where the body in effect is fighting or killing itself (MS causes the destruction of lining or sheathing of nerves).
