My son went to live with his mother for two years and now he lives with me again. I guess because he lived in Brooklyn for the past 2 years, he picked up the new york accent. For some reason it bothers me. Anyone know what i can do to make him stop, and start talking like we do in Ohio.

I agree with zipddd about having issues with his mother, because sometimes my 15 year old will do things like my ex husband and it makes me cringe!!!!!! I would never tell my son this because I don't want him to know how badly I hate his father, but man oh man it is hard to deal with. Just take deep breaths. He probably isn't doing it on purpose.

It took your son 2 years to pick up the Brooklyn accent it will take time for him to pick up the Ohio accent...

Relax stop making such a big deal about it and he will lose it faster as it won't be a power struggle between you and him... Or you can have the struggle and he may keep the accent just to spite you...

There's a simple way to get anyone to stop doing something you don't like. Simply ignore it and act like it's no big deal. When they see that no one notices or cares, they'll stop if they're only doing it for attention. Doubtful that one can gain an accent like that so quickly. I've lived in other states and sounded like I was from the same old place the entire time. If that doesn't help, you might be able to enroll him in speech classes designed to lose the accent.

Sounds like it bothers you because it's a reminder of his mother, a memory that you'd rather not have. Give him time, he didn't pick up the accent overnight, it won't go away overnight either. The younger he is, the easier it will fade away, but there's nothing that you can do in the meantime to change it, so you'll just have to deal with it. Sorry, pops.

You can't make him stop. That's just the way he speaks. There's nothing wrong with having a New York accent. I'm really getting tired of people who have problem with New Yorkers and anything related to them. It pisses me off. Don't you have anything better to worry about? Be glad he isn't doing drugs and beating up old ladies.

Give him time- he will start to get out of the New York accent soon. When we moved from Michigan to Texas my daughter started talking like a Texan- now we live in Indiana and she talks "normal" again. Give it time.

Your son may like the novelty of being the only one in his group of friends or at his school who talks differently. He may have a girlfriend or female acquaintence who likes the way he talks, that would certainly prolong it.... maybe watch movies with people who talk with an altogether different accent, a southern accent maybe, to coax him out of it? Memphis accents are really good at beign easy to pick up. Wish you luck!

Dunno how old the boy is, but he may grow out of it. it prol bothers you cause you have unresolved issues with his mother.. get over it. If hes a teenager, and you keep trying to correct it or punish him.... you should just go in another room and beat your head on the wall. And BTW.. we people in Ohio have accents too.. just go out west and everyone will ask you were your from. Course I had neighbors in Germany who wanted to know why I didnt have an accent, they were use to southern and new england accents. Its who we are...

The best thing you can do is to ignore it. Depending on the age of the child, he may very well pick up some of the Midwestern accent.

Take him to East Texas for a few years. The mix will probably sound like he is from Indiana or Ohio.
