Yeah, When they tell you to evacuate, get your asses moving. Period.

Yes, you are on your own. One of the major problems was that the whole plan quickly fell apart. For instance there are pictures of several busses partially underwater. The city hired emergency bus drivers in a preplanned event to evacuate the city. Those bus drivers left the city without the people or the busses. The same could be said about the flooded trains.

Also the chain of command was broken. For internal natural disasters (that happen in a single state), it is the governor's responsibility to handle it. She was too busy blaming FEMA, which is like blaming the insurance company for not putting out the fire. As far as I know, FEMA is a relief organization. It's the National Guard that is the first line of defense for a crises like this. Ok, now the National Guard is called in and of course with 100,000 or more people all over the freaking place, the National Guard has to get all their equipment in, set it up and go through the motions. This could take a few days and it did. It didn't have to be that way if the people walked 10-20 miles north.

Also pay attention to property and insurance if you can't afford to fight the insurance companies, you can't afford the property.

What is there to learn? We cannot stop hurricanes and we cannot stop people who want to loot to change their attitude. A crook is a crook is a crook.

What we can learn from Katrina is how many to send to jail and for how long.

Katrina was helpful because it exposed a corrupt city and that exposure was helped by inadvertently taking too long to send help, The thrashing about, on the part of the natives, caused people in government to look at what was happening and thereby uncovered a rotten system in place. A system that was corrupt for a long time. A system that might have gone on for many more years.

In that respect Katrina was helpful and was a good thing.

I don't think so because the government would have made sure that New Orleans would have the right protection it needs for future hurricanes. As long as America keeps supporting Bush it will continue to fall. Sad to say this about my own country, but the government is the main reason we have all the problems this country now has.

We had hail and tornadoes final month. i'm nonetheless waiting for Oprah and Sean Penn to bypass to...yet that's yet another challenge. I remember being on a bus excursion of recent Orleans. As we drove by utilising a levee, the instruction manual pronounced that “all and sundry is conscious if the levee breaks the 9th will flood”. So if SHE knew appropriate to the subject of the levees, why didn’t the interior of sight authorities? Katrina is getting used back to bash Bush. EDIT: Paul, bypass to youtube and seek for barney frank on katrina to be sure who's bringing it up back.

Just a clarification of notice: The evacuation of Houston in the face of Rita did not go smoothly at all. Gas stations ran out of gas. Gas trucks sent out to assist stranded motorist had the wrong nozzles. Food and water were depleted all along the route. The drive from Houston to DFW took over 12 hours, it is a four hour drive normally. People were not given directions to Red Cross shelters, they were given direction to Hotels which would charge them. Even now, the area hit by Rita is still a mess. No, we have yet to learn that under this administration every one is on their own.

I would also point out that if you do not have transpiration you cannot get out.

Do not build below sea level.

Do not take money Federal Government gives you to repair levees & spend on other expenses. This was done so Govenor looked good when no taxes were raised.

Evacute when goverment says to. This is a mistake made during every hurricane.

If you chose to not evacute, walk out - run get out. Do not expect rescue workers to endanger their lives to get to you until water goes down.

Do not blame everyone but yourself when the worse happens.

Make sure your Govenor is not a showboater. "My state does not need federal help, we can talk care of it".

Remember if you rent, the landlord will probably not rebuild. Look into relocating.

Yes, America has learned things. One thing is that you can't depend on our government for help and you shouldn't live 30 feet below sea level in a hurricane prone zone.

However, the idiots in our government (I know I'm being redundant, be quiet) enjoy wasting our hard earned money. Just like there is $4 trillion missing from the Pentagon. I love America.

what the hurricane warning systems are for, that you cant count on your local government to evacuate you, that you cant trust your governor to do anything either..not to live below sea level..build better houses on higher ground..to just leave your doors unlocked the crackheads are going to take it anyway..after all they were starving and out of water but took big screen tv's..

Yep, don't depend on your government (esp local and state) to get you help to evacuate. And even in the midst of human tragedy, there are opportunists ready to take advantage of the situation.
