My friend, the question you're asking sounds exactly a class assignment question and what you're basically doing here is asking us to provide your answer for you. Which I won't do.

Study the painting yourself. Your teacher gave you an easy one here, using Edward Hopper's 'Nighthawks At The Dinner,' one of the more famous paintings by an American artist.

But I will make a few suggestions. Do you see design in the painting? All man-made shapes are designs of one kind or another. Do the designs (frame of the windows, counter-top, outside windows from across the street) flow evenly? Do they pull against each other or blend symmetrically?

Principles of art? Do you see shadow and lightness, contrast, the highlighting of a specific object or person? Do these contrasts work effectively? Does the artist effectively draw you towards a specific object or person? Has the artist told a story? If so, what conclusions have you arrived at while studying the art?

You decide yourself.
