I would prefer to go to somewhere quiet like the beach so that we can talk, not noisy restaurants.

Eating is what comes most natural to us all and most of the time puts people at ease. You might be a little nervous on your first day and doing something natural and familiar is good for breaking the ice. Also, most dates are centered around meal time, so it only makes sense that you would eat.
Another thing would be for whomever is buying the dinner...it shows you care enough about the other person to make sure they have eaten and all of their needs are met. Food is truly comfort.

Food is comfort and therefore familiar. That is why people always go for a meal on their first date. If you don't want to do the same, then you can take your date for a walk through the park, go hiking, boating, anything...Be adventurous.

You can try going for a stroll along the beaches. This is the best for your first date to know your partner better.

... you can also tell, if the person is interested in you at all or not... by the amount of food left on the plate.
