Because suffering is a gift from God.. why shouldn't you suffer for your sins but in my opinion stigmata is a sign to show of the crucified Lord...

Stigmata is a Catholic thing. Protestants don't concern themselves with it, because they don't believe in it.

Let us not forget the words of St. Paul, in Galatians 6:17.

Edit: Paul speaks about receiving the marks and wounds of Christ. This Biblical acknowledgement should be enough for any Christian, Catholic or otherwise. The manifestation of the stigmata is a sign, in the Catholic community, of a great closeness to Christ: there is no suffering without the Presence of God. Witness the example of Padre Pio.

I'm protestant, I think it may happen to people. Someone else already mentioned the verse from Galatians that may infer that Paul had the stigmata, though it is probably meant to be interpreted as "I bear my own cross". If it is anything, I suppose it could be interpreted as a sign of a prophet or some other divine revelation.

All the Stigmata I have seen, shows the marks in the palm of the hands.
A Roman Crucifixion with nails, are placed in the wrist.
I have not gone into it, other than some people have bleeding marks. If I were to I would look first at medical reports on the marks.

Most protestants say nothing about it - they are vaguely aware of the Roman Catholic beliefs about it.
I have heard different explanations: that people have lied or exaggerated, or that a real phenomenon has occurred caused by an emotional experience. I don't make any judgment, it's not really important to me. What is important for me is that by His stripes and His wounds, I am healed of my sins.
