I have seen basements dug under existing homes but it appears to be a VERY lengthy process and must be handled by a professional because the house needs to be jacked up and put on some kind of temporary base while the basement is dug. It would probably cost as much as you paid for the house also. Sounds to me as if it would be easier to buy a different house with a basement already in existence.

you mean finishing? our basement is 1200 sq ft and it cost 20K. it still needs flooring so add another 5K

If your talkin doing the work yourself get an estimate free from a contractor first.
