why is a dogs water, and food dish put on a raised platform?

This is usually done for larger dogs so they don't have to bend down to eat. Sometimes if they bend down, they can get air in their stomach and this can be dangerous. It can also prevent dogs from developing back pain, and help if they already suffer.

It eases the strain on their necks that takes place when they have to bend down to the floor to eat. It helps them digest much better because they don't have to gulp their food up their lowered necks and back down into the stomach. It is much more comfortable and healthy for the dog to eat from a raised bowl.

my dog has a weak esophagus, and when she bends her neck to far it pinches it closed. Like bending a straw to far. A raised platform helps her eat without choking. Also dogs with arthritis have a difficult time bending there necks to eat from the floor

My dogs will eat out of a raised bowl before they will eat out of one on the floor. They actually prefer a raised bowl.

I have German Shepherd Dogs and I do not want to put unnecessary strain on their joints!

This is one method to help prevent bloat. Less excess air gets gulped into the dogs stomach which inturn can cause bloat in large deep chested dogs.
