Be prepared to spend double or 3 times your inital budget when remodeling a kitchen.
We thought we could do noe ourselfs for $5,000 to $6,000 on a 12 foot by 12 foot L shaped kitchen, but spent $12,000 when we were finished.
We did everything ourselfs except fo the Corian counter tops.
Good Luck

I would never renovate a kitchen to suit a child, unless that child had special needs. Your children will grow up and leave home. You should use the regular precautions like safety covers for outlets and safety latches for lower cabinets etc. We took our kitchen back to the studs. It took longer than we thought it would. It was a total mess. The cost was double the amount we expected.Do I love it ?YES! It is exactly way I wanted!

I cook alot at home. Kitchen should be renovated to suit the one that spends alot of time there. Cooks generally cook well if everything is in placed including the space for food preparation and cooking. It doesn't has to cost very much. Know what and how you want.
