Private school 1981-1985, Christian
New Life Christian Academy
Seattle Baptist School
part of their curriculum is both reading and memorizing the bible yearly
they let us not memorize the chronology or genealogy stuff in Numbers or Chronicles, but mostly the rest we did in fact memorize, starting first with the doctrinal "Roman Road" to salvation
now I see that many other books are out there that mirror John and Revelation's gnostic style and release dates, and can't say we will ever have "all" the bible
from early on we were encouraged to research the bible and also quote scriptures as if proof of existance and validity assuming god was real and this was only words of god
now not so sure, and see that more importantly my character and decision to be a good steward or samaritan in this life will determine my review by 'god' or others
all we know is what we have....right now and we should be about doing compassionate things as much as we can to make this world a better place

I have read the bible 3 times from cover to cover. It took me a year to read it. And no I did not memorize it unfortunately. And by the way according to the bible I cannot swear...but I can tell you that I did read it...I did not memorize everything but when people talk about certain things I can connect them to the bible and or I can talk about the stories in it.

I presume you mean from beginning to end :). Yes, since I put my trust in the Lord 40 years ago, I have read it through from beginning to end regularly. At first I did that with the New Testament, several times through in my first year as a believer. However I wanted to fill myself with the whole revelation of God, and soon began just reading through from Genesis to Revelation. Sometimes I did it in a year, sometimes two or even three times in a year, sometimes once through in two years.
Do I memorize it? I can quote very few texts by heart. One thing that has complicated that for me is that I have read it through in four different languages, depending on the context I was living in at the time. Also I have a poor memory.
Do I remember everything I read? Not everything, but it does me good anyway. A bit like the water going through the clothes to wash it. The water washes away, and doesn't remain, but the clothes are clean afterward.
I once memorized the whole epistle to the Ephesians (6 chapters) in Spanish. It took a year, and that was basically my Bible meditation for that year. I couldn't say it by heart now to save my life, but during the time I was memorizing it, it did me a lot of good. In fact Ephesians has become a very important book for me. (My poor wife: I used to go for walks with her and quote to her from Ephesians chapter one, verse one, to wherever I had reached in my memorization).
I strongly recommend reading the whole Bible through, it gives you the big picture. I also recommend memorizing as a means of meditation. And if you have the self discipline to hold on to what you have memorized, that is all to the better!
I wouldn't see the point in memorizing genealogies, except as a pure mental exercise. I have so much difficulty memorizing that I would tend to memorize only passages that speak to me.

Salaam.
Read it six times (cover to cover).
No I did not memorize it. I just took it's very important points/lessons from each book/chapter. That was when I was still Christian.
I'm a Muslim convert now, but I still read the Injeel as research and I do highly respect the Injeel and the other holy books (of course the holy Qur'an) sent by Allah.
Peace.

I can not swear, but I do read it, memorize it, wow,
glad your not my Sunday school teacher,
I have most scripture that I need memorized, Like Revelations 20:1-3
Most of Romans 8, I try to remember to be kind, loving, and have self control, that's the fruit of the Spirit.
I like Romans 2:1-3 about Judgment,
I like Matt, Mark, Luke, and John, Acts, I read in 1 and 2 Corinthians, about my life mixed with Christ. It explains who I am in Christ.
word for word, no.

I don't know about "top to bottom" but I've read it from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21. I haven't memorized it yet. It's more of a challenge to memorize than the Qu'ran, since it's about four times longer.
Why do you ask?

Yes, I have read the Hebrew bible from cover to cover. I don't have it totally memorized but can recall what I need.
By reading it all, and finding all the contradictions, death, wars, and horrible deads done in this "gods" name, I realized it was a fictional story, or rather a group of stories, used to teach morals and to scare people into believing in this cultures "god".
Yes I have been to seminary, and yes I am ordained, but I am thankfully no longer a christian, a sheep who follows blindly. I could not teach such lies or force any kind belief on people, especially one so violent that works to destroy the earth and others not like them. Your belief is your own choice, your soul is your own and cannot be owned or taken by anyone!

I have read it many times from beginning to end.....and I have not memorized it all.....I don't really stress memorization of it...I just try to spend time in the Word as much as possible.....because one can memorize it but it is the continued rereading of it that brings about more revelation of it......

Yes...I've gone cover to cover about 3 times now, and my goal is to start reading it cover to cover every year.
I have parts memorized, and am studying to memorize more and more each day. My goal here is to memorize 3 verses every day...including the geneologies!
