I was looking at a motorola pebble cell phone and thought about the scripture that says something to the effect of "making graven images unto yourself." Thank you very much!

If you want it to. It's just a fiction. Don't stress over it.

That scripture refers to God's soverignty as being the only thing that should be worshipped. When the Hebrews were in Egypt they were surronded by people that worshipped Idols. On occasion they made a golden calf and worshipped it. They justified worshipping the calf by calling it a festival to Jehovah; however, God was still displeased with thier action.

Anyway...if you obsess about that motorola pebble phone or anything else, then it becomes like a graven image or an idol.

Hi, i am a theology major. Graven images refer to things (in this case images of yourself) which take emphasis away from God. it goes with the idea that you only have a limited amount of worship that you can give, and when you worship something else (money, lust, etc) you are taking that worship away from God. I dont consider a cell phone this. this particular passage in exodus is refering to the literal idols of other nations surrounding israel, which built statues that they literally worshiped for personal gain (like for good crops).

there is a verse that says "it is easier for a rich man to get into heaven than a camel to get through the eye of a needle". but wait, dont worry, this is cool. The eye of a needle (directly translated into hebrew) refers to the gate on the outside of a town that incomming mercants would have to go through. and since their camels were packed with stuff, the camels would have to literally KNEEL to get through. that is, they looked like they were praying.

So as long as you keep God your emphasis, He will know what is in your heart and you can get the phone.

Sorry, I don't know what the pebble phone looks like. I think the scripture here is talking about idols and worshiping idols. Help me.

not unless the graven image is supposed to look like G-d.
