Well, you can get a better browser for one - I recommend Mozilla Firefox (www.firefox.com), which is a completely free, safe, fast, reliable, and relatively adfree browser that makes internet surfing ten times better. Secondly, you can get a better email system- Gmail is pretty awesome (www.gmail.com) and the spamblocker there is amazing. If you need an invitation to join, just email me at wtstar@gmail.com and I'll send you one. Also, there are various addons for a few browsers (I know firefox has this) that allow you to block images from certain websites, so that can help you out a lot.

Some browsers these days (like newer versions of Internet Explorer & Mozilla) come integrated with pop-up blockers.
If you do NOT want to upgrade to that, I suggest FreeSurfer. Do a search for "FreeSurfer."
Download it, and enable to normal mode - that should take care of your issues!
