Most of the world was still tribal type civilizations just years ago. not centuries. While Europe and America advanced, many tribal cultures continued to function even after conquest by the French, British and other European colonial empires. Native Americans were barely past stone age civilization when europeans arrived, both in the north and south continents other than some of the notable civilizations like Incas. The middle east has continued to be tribal based even as its population has swelled, and western civilization has become popular. Essentially while our technology has exploded in its development, our cultures around the world have evolved at a snails pace in most countries. To answer the last question, the middle east was never forward, so it hasn't gone backwards, it just has not caught up to the 1st world cultures of the US, Canada, Austtralia, Japan, western Europe.

I gave you a "thumbs up" on this question because you have been suspended and because I think you have shown yourself to be the type of person that deserves no respect or honor of any kind. You have made it known to everyone who sees this question that you are what is wrong in this world today.
No matter what your race and/or religion you and people like you are the heart of the problem. Your thinking is what has given birth to the terrorist problems we face today.
Personally, I would have no problem seeing this question removed. On the other hand, maybe it should stay as an example of the type of thinking that needs to be cleansed from this world.
Am I a politically correct thinker? Not at all. I just happen to have lived in a Muslim country for 23 years (I'm Christian) and saw what your kind thinking has brought about first hand.
Why do you think Christians are any better than Muslims? While I don't necessarily agree with all the tenants of the Muslim Faith, I certainly respect their right to believe it.

First of all… I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone as ignorant as you… as h.jani said, the Arabs are the ones who spread civilization into Europe (take Spain for example) oh yeah and algebra was created by an Arab (I’d suggest u research that.. ) and 2nd.. Youre calling Arabs savages? Look at the Israelis (no offence) oh yeah and go visit Dubai... and Lebanon... and Syria... and see... then come back and ask this question again... Muslims are actually known for their kindness and generosity.. What u see on TV is only what the government wishes to show u... I’ve met billions of Muslims and in fact I find some other non-Muslims more “savage”..

You paint with a very wide brush. I wouldn't say all, nor would I use the word savage. The Middle East isn't backwards, just different if you are an American. Everyone has different cultures all over the world, there is no right or wrong.

All Muslim men and women are not savages. There are Muslims throughout the world including 5.8 million Muslims in America. A large number of these are not Arabs who have emigrated but are in fact Muslim converts like myself. I am an American, Caucasian, educated women and you just called me a savage ?
Don't you think it is idiotic generalizations like this that are causing a lot of the problems in the world today? (Did I use too many big words for you.) And the countries of the Middle East have been invaded by one "civilized " country after another in their attempts at colonization. Egypt was a civilized country and had a complex form of government, banking and laws long before any of these "civilized" county's ancestors came out of their caves. The monuments they built have withstood time, weather and mans attempts to destroy them better than any of our modern structures ever will. The Pyramids are built to a construction standard that we still cannot achieve, even with all of our modern machinery. What will all of these building that we are building today look like in another 3000 years? Iraq, the country that we are destroying was the site of ancient Babylon, the site of another of the ancient wonders of the world. Have you ever actually read any history?

No I want blow you up if I meet you in the street.
What happened in Waco Texas, and other sects where people can endoctrinate many to do anything they like; do you remember Hitler; or more recently the sect that commited collective suicide when the comet Hale Bop (I think it is the right spelling) passed the solar sistem.
Some people went to Afghanistan to help them get rid of the Russians; noble enough cause if you asked me as long as no civilians are harmed; but once you are part of a group, there is no way back; I mean does John Lyndt (spelling) sounds familiar to you?
If you are part of the group you might be convinced almost anything for the cause, I mean, David Koresh (spelling) in Wako convinced his followers that he was actually Jesus.
Hitler convinced millions (not all thank God), that he was right; and the same applies to every sect, take one text from the Koran, have an interpretation ready by forgetting about the context of the scripture and voila. Ossama blows up everything in sight, saying that civilian Americans have voted for their government, who supports Israel who kills Palestinians ...etc
Simple isn't it.

Look Islam, firstly, is the worshiping of the only God "Allah". Secondly, it is the religion of peace and racial equallity.
It doesn't call for killing and slaying innocent souls. Don't hear or even yield to the slandering, sleazing media, ok.
I'm just asking you to try to explore Islam; you may even ask me if you like because I'm an Egyptian-muslim.
All what you hear about Muslims as fanatics is all wronge; these are only some maniac extremists.
Islam makes you reach a very high spiritual level with Allah.
All Islam is about is worshiping God in your life, do good deeds and deligently work in life to be productive;
then afer death you'll be "dipped" and eternally live in God's paradise, these are no mythologies.
The heathens well be thrown in the flaring hell, also eternally with no return.
My advice is to read about Islam and muslims, ok....don't assail anyone you KNOW NOTHING ABOUT !

As an american living in Saudi I can say that I have met some of the most friendliest people I have ever known. I have made some incredible lifelong friends and have never had one single uncomfortable experience. You can't base your opinions on the media. I'm a devout christian and Islamic extremists are no different than our church-burners and snipers. Never label unless you have absolute proof. All the arabic people I know are gentle, caring, and family oriented. Not to mention they have more patience than I will ever have.

I initially thought about answering this question but would rather suggest the Asker find some facts about Arabic culture and their contribution to world culture himself and not take a limited worldview of the Arab people.
Look for the following names:
Al-Battani
Al-Khwarizmi
Al-Farabi
Al-Ghazzali
Al-Kindi
Ibn-al-Haytham
Ibn-Bajjah
Ibn-Rushd
Ibn-Khaldun
Ibn-Sina
All of these (and many others) contributed to many of today's accepted fields like science, mathematics, medicine and architecture. It has also been documented and can be readily verified by today's Western historians that when Europe was going through the middle ages the Arab nations kept the flame of knowledge alive, improved upon it and in many cases were responsible for the very existence of that knowledge in the first place.
