There IS no incentive for them to learn English ... and considering so many of them seem to entertain the rather ridiculous idea that this country belongs to them, lock stock and barrel, they dont feel they have to ... but why our corporations and administration continue to pander to their misguided notions is beyond me ....

If the US would STOP including choices to speak in Spanish, the incentive would be great. They would have to speak English in the US to get those government benefits or the jobs they are after.

I once got a phone bill written in Spanish and since I live in Texas which is in the United States, I felt that was kind of odd. So I wrote back to say please don't bill me in a foreign language again. So far it worked.
Where I live there's even a FREE newspaper in Spanish. Classified ads in the regular newspaper usually have "Bilingual preferred".
I don't understand why the U.S. has to change so we won't inconvenience people who don't speak English. It makes no sense.

let see if i can make it simple......
Latinos= u.s. citizens of Latin American origin. IE... parents from Mexico, Cuba, puerto Rico, Argentina,etc....
immigrants= people born in a different country living in America.... these are people who don't speak English....
there are two reasons why you may believe that "Latinos don't want to speak English"
1. the constant influx of Spanish speaking immigrants in this country makes it seem that these immigrants aren't learning English...... when studies show that not only are immigrants learning English..... but many second and third generation children lose their parents native language
2. linguists say it takes 6 years for an educated person to acquire cognitive academic language proficiency in any language....... and more years for many uneducated immigrants coming to America!!!!!!!

Has anyone noticed that year after year there are more tv stations and radio broadcast in spanish than before? Why should they if the country is changing to fit their needs?I have noticed several German,Bosnian, and Russian coworkers that are also very interested in learning Spanish.I think the Americans need to catch up or fall behind.

Well if the lations learn english they have a better opportunity of getting a job than a black person or a white person simply because the spanish speaking community is growing and they are trying to make americans speak spanish to i guess serve as competition maybe

The laws to become a American citizen say you have to learn English. But Hispanics want to keep their native language. The twites in washington do nothing about it because it might cost them votes. In California they print their ballots in about a dozen languages. What a waste of tax payers money when all you need is english because that is the offical language of AMERICANS.ENGLISH as a first language not as a second one.

Well my friend, people in other countries are not forced to learn English but other "aliens" realize to not end up in the ghetto in east LA you need to speak the language in order to move up on the social, and corporate ladder, that way they're not making minimum wage for the rest of their lives.

those who are too lazy and ignorant to learn the language are waiting for the complete conversion not only from English to Spanish(and quite frankly, it's not the authentic Spanish, either), but also from the American ways that I admire and respect to the ways that made their countries dirt poor and corrupt, their people ignorant and unskilled, their lives hopeless.

The incentive is the basis that you can obtain a higher paying job if you speak English. Yes if all you wish to do is the basic, labour intensive jobs of gardening, building, maids, ect then there is no need, if you want to be a lawyer, banker, doctor ect,ect and get paid the big bucks - that is your incentive.
