It seems like everyday on the news they are saying there is something else wrong with our produce. For example, the spinach was making everyone sick, now the lettuce is bad, and the pesticides they use on fruit. I'm trying to be healthy, but should I stop eating fresh fruits and vegetables for awhile?

No, you should calm down and apply a common sense approach to the produce you choose to eat. In case you didn't realize it, improperly bottled, canned, or even frozen foods are the major leading causes of botulism poisoning. Actually, the source of most food poisoning still continues to be the kitchen at home. Improper handling of raw foods and poor sanitation practices are the leading causes. The lettuce you bought at the store might leave there very safe, but if you grab the chicken out of one bag, set it on the counter and then reach in for the salad ingredients- guess what? You just raised your chances of salmonella poisoning. The apples you so carefully picked out, sitting there on the counter. Did you wash them off first? Do you know who last had a hand on them before you put it in your mouth? Did you wash your hands first? Did you wash after you went to the bathroom? If you didn't, the e-coli you ingest could be your own.
That can of green beans you want for dinner- it sat in a warehouse several times. Do you know how many roaches crawled around and over it? Do you know if a mouse took a wee on the carton? And did you think to wipe off the lid before you opened it? When was the last time you cleaned and sanitzed your can opener? So, from the top of the can, or even your can opener, into the nice clean can of beans.
There is no way to completely eliminate the risk of eating anything, really. You can only do what you can reasonably do to lower the risk as much as possible. Mostly, that involves sanitation on your part. Thinking about how you are handling your food after you bring it home. Keep a clean kitchen, wash the food before preparation, practice safe food handling, and you will find you have reduced the risk of food poisoning considerably. Ignore the practices, and it won't matter if your food was produced in surgical sterility, you will still end up sick sooner or later.

The germs in Spinach and lettuce come from the ground. In fact they come from the manure they use. With the closeness to the ground is what helped the germs get on the Veggies. Imported fruit has some pesticides on them(maybe). Buy American and you'll be safe.

I would still be careful with lettuce and spinach because of the current issues, but by all means keeping eating healthy fruits and vegetables!! If anything, there is tougher scrutiny on our produce and its contents after the recent problems with spinach.
