The best shoe is the Smart Fit brand of shoe at Payless. They are very inexpensive and provide great arch support for a new walker. All the physical therapists I work with tell parents to get these shoes. They are better than the more expensive shoes such as Nike. At home in the house I would have him stay barefoot though. It helps his walking become more steady.

They say that bare feet is best. For the first shoe I take them to a nice shoe store where the folks know just what they are doing.

When they get older is when I hit Target and Payless Shoes. Those first shoes are important

walking around the house, you don't want shoes on all the time, yet socks may be slippery ... solution ...
Sew a leather or vinal sole onto the bottom of his socks. You only need to do 2 or 3 pairs like this. It works out cheaper, more comfortable for him, and keeps his feet warm.
Just take them off before changing his nappy/diaper. You can dirty up the socks quickly if you don't.

When it comes to walking outside, check the answers above ... my kids haven't asked me to shop for shoes for them in years

Stride Rite was the best for my kids. The stores that carry the shoes are very helpful about getting the right fit - and it is so important for developing feet to get the proper fit.

I liked WeeBoks! (reebok) they don't come with all sorts of characters. simple nicely priced. Under 30 bucks! buy about a 1/2 size to a full size too big because they grow into them fast at that age.

You mean "brand"?? I don't know of different "types"- you just purchase first walking shoes. They help the foot muscles build strongly.
