my boyfriend noticed that he had a rash on his armpit and we just thought it was because of his deoderant or something. But it hurts him really bad and he works out with the corp everyday so it bugs him even more. He went to the university clinic and they told him that it was staph and that they need to slice open his underarm and take the pus out. What we want to know is, is the slicing necessary? we don't even really think it is staph.

So I tell all my patients the same thing, the pus needs to come out. It is called an abscess and it needs drainage, it pops or it needs to be opened. Your BF will also need antibiotics.

A note from the previous answer, you do not require IV antibiotics, an oral form will be enough.

Dont worry about the slicing. They will just cut a small maybe 1/2 inch slit. Why they need to cut it is because they will need to drain the pus. It looks really gross I wouldnt reccommend you watch when he has to drain it himself to get the remaining pus out. Anyway it will heal fine, most likely there will be no scar after a month or so depending on how fast he usually heals. I had this done last year and they slice just under my arm I healed just fine and there is no scar.

If it's a staph infection, any strong antibiotic will work. You can go to http://webmd.com and type in staph infection. Usually, there is a fever with this. 102 to 104. IV antibiotics are the best. It sounds to me like it's a boil, cyst or some other sort of growth. If it's a staph infection he should be as sick as a dog.
