I'm just wondering what time a three year old should be in bed. Other parents are telling me that my daughter, who is recently attending preschool, SHOULD BE in bed by 8:00-8:30, but she's typically not in bed and asleep until 9pm.

What's your viewpoint?

My viewpoint is that whatever you do, be consistent. If it were my daughter (but mine is only 4 months old right now lol), her bedtime would be about 7 p.m. (And it will be, when she gets to that age.) Kids need alot more sleep than we do. But if you think your daughter is ok with a 9 p.m. bedtime, then that's your choice. Like I said, just be consistent about it. If that's bedtime, then it is bedtime. Don't let her be the boss. You're the parent. If you haven't already, try setting up a nightly routine. Teeth brushing, story time, pray with her (if you do that), then lights out. Something like this. The routine will help her get used to bedtime. She'll know what to expect and will feel secure; and she'll also know you mean business. Hope this helps! :-)

I use to try to put my son to bed at a certain time (around 8) but we would just end up fighting for an hour or two! He goes to bed between 10-11! I know that makes me a bad parent but my child has nothing to get up early for. He's not in preschool, I'm a stay at home mom who works part time in the evenings. I'm not recommending you take my advise becuase we are not the typical family.

That's about how my 4 year old is. It will do no good to put her to bed before she's tired. 8:30 is good if she has to get up around 6:30 - 7:00. About this age is when you start getting away from the afternoon nap. This will help her to sleep better at night but she may be a grouch in the evening until she gets used to it.

I have 3 yr old..and i put her in bed between 8 and 8:30...BUT you cant make a child actually go to sleep...She sings and plays with stuffed animals until 9, 10 or sometimes 11!!! so the environment is right...when she is tired enough she falls asleep! Don't always listen to other parents either...most exaggerate! They say one thing because they thinks its what is best...and yeah they only watch one hour of tv a month!. haha

If you have a normal "ritual" like bath, brushing teeth, reading a story, lullaby music...you can usually get her to go to sleep at whatever you need in order for her to get about 10 hours of sleep. Of course, you may have fights...like the other answerer that said between 8-11pm...but try a consistant ritual and you'll avoid trouble with her. After preschool, you'll have to have a regular routine anyway, so it's best to get started on it early in life. We could all use a little bedtime story and a warm bath to wind down. Even mom! Good luck to you...enjoy these years as they are the BEST!!!

I think they need plenty of rest, if the 3 year old takes naps still I would say about eight eight thirty. BUT if s/he doesnt I would say about seven or seven thirty! If the child gets into routine if waking up early is a problem it will become less of a problem if sleep becomes regular. Good Luck, When I baby sit my nephews they go to bed early and sleep in, because they get more rest they are in better moods and their parents dont know how I do it...

I think each child should be treated as an individual. There are certain things to take into consideration such as, do they still nap?, do eat dinner at a late hour? do you have a nightime routine?. Is she tired or crabby before 8?
I had my kids in bed no later than 8.00 pm, but thats what worked for us. You need to do what works for your family, and if she wakes up rested, then whatever time she is going to bed is working.

I think that 8 is a good time. But it depends on your lifestyle as to what time is right for you. If 9 is ok with you and she is not overly tired the next day for school then why change it. Every child is different and what works for one might not work for the other. Good luck!
