Sometimes the less said the better.

I've convinced people before just by telling them the truth, and when they start to question me, I would just walk away after saying "Believe what you want - I've told you my side of it. Now you have to decide for yourself what you want to believe."

Invariably they will chase after me and ask me to convince them, which I will decline to do. After all, telling them the truth is all you can or should do.

hmmmmm...If it is something not very important, don't worry about it, if you didn't do it why would you be afraid of what other people think. On the other hand, if it is something such as a life and death matter, try finding evidence to disprove the other person. this is all I can say since you didn't give much information but most of the time if it is just gossips, ignore it, it will go away. Hope I can help.
