Buddy, Ideas are never patented only innovations and their development procedures are patented.
Now to protect you idea at a very early stage, you dont need to pay anything. All you should do is write the Idea in a piece of paper. And Post it to yourself. You can also email it to yourself - but make sure that you dont open the letter or email.
The email would have date of receipt and the letter would have postal department's date stamp. This would automatically register your idea as copyrighted.
Make sure that you put that (C) mark and the date of writing that idea at the bottom of pages. Dont write it on the Envelope or Email subject.
One more thing: this would only work if you are in Northern America or Western Europe (Like US, UK, Canada, France, etc). But if you do it in these countries, it applies worldwide.

don't tell anyone.....
First you can do a patent search...to see if you can even patent your idea.
Then if there is nothing....you can find someone to assist you with the costs...that of course is depending on whether or not your idea/invention is any good.
You do not need a working prototype...you can apply for a design patent(not a utility patent)....if you have elaborate and detailed designs of your invention...you can proceed with the filing process.

You could label it as patent pending. If you truly intend on patenting it then it would be more or less pending, even though the paperwork isn't officially started. It wouldn't probably hold up in a law suit though, but it might deter a thief.

take it from experience of having multiple items stolen from me.....DON'T TELL A SOUL, NOT YOUR BEST FRIEND, NOT YOUR DAD, NOT YOUR GRANDMA, NOT EVEN YOUR DOG.
To breath one word of it or to show it to one person will comprise it and allow you to lose the item.
Todays world there is much greed....people will easily steal an idea to make money over coming up with something themselves.
