I'm an atheist. The biggest misconception is that atheists are amoral. We have the same (if not better) morals as anybody else. We also mistakenly are called Communists. And there is a big misconception that we are atheists because we're angry at God or had something bad turn us away from religion. Sorry, but I've had a pretty good life and have never had a bad experience in church, other than fairly boring sermons.

I am a Catholic Christian.

The biggest misconception about Christianity is that it is polytheistic, because of the Trinity. It is not. It is monotheistic. The Blessed Trinity, the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit Is All the Same God.

The biggest misconception about Catholicism is that we worship the Blessed Virgin Mary. We do not. We have a deep reverence for her, because she is the Mother Of Christ. But, we do not worship her as a goddess.

I think I failed to outline the answer. Becasue my religion is Islam, and people have way too many misconceptions about it. It's difficult to rank one out of all.

Anyway, from my pov, a major misconception is Islam preaches and teaches terrorism and hatred. Another equally big misconception is Islam's God is different than the God of Christianity and Judaism.

Ohh did I mention one?

The number one misconception I run into is that those of a religious bend on this site think that non believers are incapable of understanding their point of view. On the contrary, I quite understand exactly what they are saying having read and studied the same materials they have. I have just reached different conclusions. The problem is, that I haven't heard a single thing from the believers that I haven't heard hundreds of times before. So far nothing new or different has been presented by our religious friends. They just keep rehashing the same old arguments, backing them up with the same old biblical quotes.

Misconceptions regarding Christians: [edit] That we are not well educated because we choose not to answer every question or rant placed here. That we have no fun in our life and that we give all our money away to the church. None of which is true. After giving what we choose, God provides plenty of money for our family to live on and supply all our needs. I have a great amount of happiness in my life and wouldn't trade it for all the gold and silver in this world.

The very latest misconception I heard was a statement posted only a little while ago (Tuesday evening) which is quoted below:

{{{They're also the same ones who will seek out a doctor's advice when sick, and then thank God when they become well. Yet they tell others to pray, and all will be healed. Scary.}}}

My answer to the statement regarding Christians vs doctors and healing is below:

{{{"... the reason we thank God when we are well again, is because we enjoy thanking God in ALL things, not just our health, but in every aspect of life because it is He who gave us our beautiful life on this earth which everyone seems to freely enjoy!}}}

James 1:19-20
"My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires".

What a great question!

As an atheist, the one biggest misconception that drives me craziest is that atheism is a religion. It bothers me most because I think there is a dangerous agenda behind it.

I think this propaganda is spread to try to muddle the school prayer/genesis in biology class issues.

Great question!
I'm looking forward to reading the other replies.

Moving along, I'm jewish. I think perhaps the biggest misconception people have is that christianity is "judaism + jesus". It isn't. Our faiths are very different (like the difference between islam or mormonism and christianity) and soooooo often I hear questions about (read: against) judaism which simply don't make sense to a jew, but only make sense to a christian conception of what judaism is.
Oh, and the idea that jews have/do reject jesus without a good reason. Puh-lease! We introduced y'all to the Torah; do you think we haven't read it?!

I'm atheist, and I get the impression that we are viewed as immoral Christian haters. That's not true. I can't think of anyone that I even dislike, let alone hate. True, come evening I start getting smart with my answers, but the constant bashing can get on a person's nerves.

I also feel that I have pretty strong morals, as do most people regardless of their beliefs.

Oh, lately I've noticed that we're also being called angry and depressed. Again, not true.

Only one? Wow, hmmmm...... probably the one that says the Quran preaches violence towards non believers. But then there's also the misconception that God is a moon god. And the one about Muhammad being a pedophile. Lest we forget the one about how Islam was spread by the sword, lol! These are probably the biggest ones. I know, I cheated. I listed more than one, but with so many misconceptions about Islam, how can you choose?

The suggestion that athiests are somehow not capable of morality simply because they don't believe in God. Like Muslims or Christians have a great track record with moral behavior.
