The problem with rental discs is they get scuffed up quite easily because people don't give proper care to them. Try cleaning the disc with a soft cloth before play and see if that helps.
As far as DVD players go, I bought my first in 1999 and have gone through 3 of them. Sony doesn't really last all that long, so if you do buy a new one, stay away from them.

Have you tried using a DVD cleaning disc? Your laser lens might be dirty.
I have never used a DVD from Netflix, so if you already clean your DVD player regularly (every 10 hours of play) I am wondering what format is Netflix using on their DVDs?
If you have cleaned your DVD .., then ask Netflix if they are using something other than the norm.., maybe they are copying these as DVD+RW or some format your particular DVD player is not recognizing.
NOTE: If you have not cleaned your DVD Player in 5 years you may have to run the cleaning disc two or three times.

Yes, it's time to upgrade. Technology doesn't
move quite as fast with video formats as say
with personal computers, but improvements,
updates, and changes are make regularly.
I'm not saying to need to invest in the latest
formats (i.e. HD DVD and Blu-Ray Disc) just
yet when they still have bugs in their first-
generation stage, but a good universal player
will benefit you if you watch a lot of movies
and even listen to different formats of music.
Examine all of the customer reviews on the
different price comparison websites, and you
should be able to find just the one for you at a
pretty decent price -prices are lower than ever
on DVD players nowadays.
As for your current DVD player, you could sell
it as-is on eBay or CraigsList, or just use it in
your bedroom or another alternative room where
you can watch the movies you own still.

If nothing works consider buying BlueRayDiscPlayer so you can be up to date and spend that money wisely. Maybe it only plays first generation DVD's. Good luck on this one. Try inserting one of those CD lens cleaner discs that they sell out there.
