The Jeruselam that you are referring to is not the same as the one that Abraham was seeking:

By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.....But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. Hebrews 11:8-10,16

In the NT, there are two Israels. There is an Israel according to the flesh, and a Spiritual Israel. Spiritual Israel is composed of all who are Christ's including physical Jews and gentiles. When you see Jerusalem encompassed by armies refers to the final battle of Armegeddon when Satan will attempt through the antiChrist power to destroy the last remnant of Christians with his death decree. (See Revelation 13) Fortunately, for Christians, the kings of the east will come to the rescue. (See Revelation 16) It is worthwhile to note that Jesus states that His coming will be like the lightning that shineth even from the east unto the west. He and the armies of heaven are the true kings of the east who rescue spiritual Israel from spiritual Babylon, much like Cyrus in the OT, another king of the east rescued physical Israel from physical babylon.

Cyrus dried up the river Euphrates by diverting the channel to get under the gates at Babylon. In Revelation, a spiritual Babylon sits on a spiritual river Euphrates, that represents many peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues (See Revelation 17:15) The drying up of this river (Revelation 16:12) refers to people leaving this false religious system when they realize they have been duped by her. (Revelation 17:16)

Jerusalem has been "compassed with armies" hundreds of times in the last 2000 years. The crusades, the seven-days' war, the founding of isreal, the Romans (dozens of times)...
Never signaled any supernatural event before, why should it now?

Not yet.
But it's not too far away.

The Desolation will require that the Temple be rebuilt. It's there that the Abomination of Desolations takes place when Anti-Christ establishes worship to himself.

(Jerusalem is not desolate as other writers tell us. It is a growing and thriving metropolis.)

Jerusalem has been desolate ever since it has been downtrodden by the gentiles (unbelievers)

I think you mean encompassed. Please show us a period in the last 4000 years or so when it wasn't encompassed, being attacked, destroyed, plowed under and generally messed with. My point is, what else is new? What does it prove?
