The family does not witness the actual cremation, although they may watch the body (usually in a cardboard cremation container, but nonetheless always covered) being placed into the cremation chamber. The entire process takes about 4 hours, the bodies are cremated at about 1800 degrees, and because there are so many filters and afterburners, there is no smell. The chamber is designed to fire strongly at the torso, as that is the thickest portion of your body. There is usually a small "viewing" or "witness" room for the family to watch them being placed into the chamber. Hope this helps, take care!

They place the body into a giant furnace and about 24 hours later for people the remove the ashes and place them into a container for the family usually an urn or vase, The average person can almost fill one of the old round Quaker oats containers. You can then take the ashes home to place on the mantel, bury them at a grave site, launch them into space (a small quantity of them anyway), or scatter them in the wind. I don't remember any smells, it's not like taking a lighter and burning the flesh the oven that they cremate people in is much hotter.

No dear, you don't see or smell anything. At the appropriate time the coffin moves behind a door or curtain and then the congregation file out of the room.
The actual cremation happens some distance away - you will not be aware of anything 'nasty'.
Some days later, you will be given the urn of ashes - it's quite big, about 2 kgs I would say. Most people scatter the ashes at a favourite spot or perhaps in the sea - it depends on what the person liked in life. I put my fathers ashes in the ground around his favourite tree in the garden. Hope that helps.

You do not "witness" the actual cremation. Whereas, you don't watch the body go up in flames. We sat in a little chapel that adjoins the crematory for awhile. Cremation takes hours, the body is put into a cardboard container and moved into the crematory oven. Afterwards the ashes are collected, bone fragments are ground and the remains are put into an urn or container. We picked up the remains and the funeral home at a later date.

Well, I was not at either of my parents cremations. My mother didn't go to my fathers creamation either.
It was too much for her when he died and it was too much for me when she died so you aren't alone there.
I have no idea if it smells or anything but I would imagine it would have some sort of smell. They may mask the smell if there are family attending.
All I really know for sure is that your body is placed in a 'furance' and is burned.

The body is burned at least 2x (on each side) then because there are bits of bone and stuff left-it is ground up. I have always thought I did not want to be cremated because I wouldn't be sure that they didn't get parts of someone else in there with me--Yech--the thought of burning I don't like either.
