Okay first, !Congratulations! Know that the process of planning a wedding can be very stressful and overwhelming just remember the purpose of the day and you will hopefully get through it fine. One thing that you can do is a yahoo or google search for what you are looking for 'popular wedding...' One other places I have seen that might be helpful is
WilsonWedding Warehouse. com, they have some pretty cool stuff. Once you do your search and narrow down what you are looking for this would be a great place to begin. Another thing that might help is to get a wedding planning book/guide so you can cross all your T's and dot all your I's as YOU and YOUR Fiancee' sees fit. You can ask people for examples that work in certain wedding oriented industries (i.e cake shops, decor places etc.), they are usually very happy to help and that may help a lot on a humble.
The day belongs to the two of you so don't let too many mouths minds, or ideas overwhelm you.
I applaud you for being a male and being apparently hands-on in the process she may need you more than either of you think and vice versa! I wish you all the best...til dearth do you part, good and bad, sick or poor!!! Congratulations. hope this helps at least a little!!!!

Hi,
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. The question "What options do we have" is a very common one. Unfortunately, the answer is not that helpful. You have thousands of different options for every aspect of your wedding. The very first questions that I ask the bride and groom are "What are the things you have in common with each other?" and "How many people do you expect to invite at the wedding?. The answers to those questions determine a lot.
You did say in you question that both of you prefer not to have a big elaborate affair, right? So let's assume that you are inviting around 150 guests and that what you both have in common is a love for 1940's film noir. I would then suggest that you pick that time frame as a theme. Not decorated as if it was 1940, but small touches that really add to the atmosphere. For example, instead of a limo, have a car that was popular in that year. Often car buffs are more than happy to help out the happy couple and will take you both to the reception from the church. Put an ad in the local classified and ask for help. The ad will be cheap and someone may just come forward to help out. Of course, I would choose either black and white, or black, white and teal to go with the era. Favours could be movie passes put in an envelope to look like an awards winning envelope. You could hire a "cigarette girl" to walk around giving out other items (bubbles, gum, candy, even liquer shots at receiving line time). I would do a centerpiece with ostrich feathers in black and white and a black and white cake with layers that look like movie reels. For the brides dress, I would go for one of the brand new feathered styles (a mermaid cut with feathers jutting out from bottom..stunning). For the tux, a top hat and tails. For the music, have a small band sing some popular soft show tunes during the pre-dinner, some soft music for the era for dinner and then have the band open the night with something fun. After that, you could have a DJ take over. Having the band for a short time would be less expensive and at times, you can get bands who need the exposure (but are still very good) to play for free as long as you are okay with them giving out their card or flyer to each guest (some people find that tacky and some don't care).
Phew!! okay, see how you take one thing and then it just snowballs into something fun? Theming a wedding is the first most important thing. It unifies everything and gives you tons of ideas for keeping the guests entertained. You will also have a VERY talked about wedding.
Good luck to both of you. Have fun doing this, because it's not supposed to be confusing or frustrating.

I work in a petstore and every summer get large orders for Betta fish, they put them on the tables as center pieces, just be sure to either add a note under the bowl for proper care and what items they need to buy at the petstore, or you could add little "care" packages for them.
